I'm thinking about getting an exhaust the cheapest way possible, which seems to be getting a Magnaflow muffler. THe local exhaust shop around here quoted me around $250 for an a Magnaflow muffler with 3" piping from the catback or y pipe and a chrome tip. It will look similar to stock with the one pipe except for the tip. When I asked about having an two pipe outlet he said those are only are cosmetic purposes and wouldn't add any performance other than the 8-10hp this would add. Is what I am told accurate or would another option be better? I am looking for something less than $400 with good performance and not too loud(got a new born).
Well, i dont have good experience with muffler shops personally. They are gonna tell you what they want you to hear because he wants your money.
Hands down a purpose built exhaust for your truck is the best route to go. They last longer, sound better and give you better performance. the cheapest place I have ever seen Magnaflow exhaust is from www.completeexhaust.com BUT you have to call the guy and he will give you a much better deal once you tell him you got his site from a forum. I would say right around $450 shipped will get you a complete dual exit magnaflow system from him. and it will last the life of your truck.
My experience with exhaust shops deal is they last 3-4 years and then start falling apart, deveolping holes and rusting out. usually the tips are the first to go.
You can buy a new JBA stainless catback for $357 delivered at performancecenter.com. This catback, part# 40-1400, is a proven performer and is mild in tone to some members. It is a touch louder than the 18" Magnaflow muffler swap I previously had on.

The 22" magnaflow will give you the same HP gains, but with less 'noise' & drone than the 18".
Mine sounds almost like stock at idle and under lite throttle, but you know it's there when you get on the gas.

I was looking on the other Titan site and the review said the Maganflow catback single exit was a good option. Is this is the same as "Teh Wicked" mentioned? Also, it seems if I wanted to go the Magnaflow muffler only route I would get the 22" muffler(14586 or 12586).
You can get both of those exhaust from that site. Magnaflow manufactures 2 different exhaust for our trucks. 1 is a single exit out the passenger side behind the rear tire just like the factory. the other is a dual exit out the back, the dual exit is a little more expensive due to the more materials needed to make it whole.
I just called the guy and spoke with him...
$466 shipped for the Magnaflow dual exit system. and $423 shipped for the single exit.
If your just wanting the muffler that can be ordered from him as well, he is a very nice guy and will talk to you personally if you call him and tell him what you want.

if you are looking to get a muffler for a great price the magnaflow exhaust would the best bang for your buck plus performance compared to other cat backs. also the guy at performance center is a nice guy and they ship out fast. i immediatly noticed the differance once it was installed in my 2008.5 titan and i love it. i also think its gonna be on for awhile until i can scrape up more cash for a full system. i know u wont be dissapointed. goodluck on your decision..
I decided that I'm going with the SS 22" Magneflow muffler P/N: 14586 from performace center or performance peddler. Now concerning the shop doing the 3" piping from the Cat or Y-pipe, is that recommended?
If you buy the whole catback setup, it is a bolt on job. I got the JBA slightly used from another member that was selling his truck and bolted up the exhaust and some step rails in about an hour. I think that it would be cheaper to do yourself than having a shop doing custom exhaust work...

Exhaust design is a very definite science... The pipe sizes need to be selected so that power is not compromised at low speeds, but large enough so that the high volume of exhaust can be evacuated at the higher end.
Think of it like water through a pipe... If you have the same amount of pressure, the size of the pipe will determine the exit velocity. A very small pipe, and the water shoots out like a rocket. A very large pipe and it dribbles out.
Now, albeit, there's not much difference between a 2.25", 2.5" or 3" pipe as far as the human eye is concerned. It's not like a 2" vs. a 10" pipe. But when it comes down to the HP and pressure an engine is making, it can sure tell the difference.
So, too small, you lose top end. Too big, you lose low end. That's why all the manufacturers spend so much time in R&D to tune the exhaust properly for the specific vehicle. Just slapping a pipe on there because some muffler guy happens to have that in his shop, and it works on 5.0 liter Mustangs, isn't necessarily what EVERY vehicle wants or needs.
Papa_D is more the expert on this than myself, and many of the IRC VK56 guys have experimented with various exhausts and pipe sizes to determine what works best for what they want. I'd trust them or the catback developers a lot quicker than I'd trust some guy in the local muffler shop..... That's all.
go with the JBA if you want the best bang for your buck. That is what I will be getting. In fact I was told that the the 40-1400 exhaust is JBA's most popular selling exhaust system, hense why it is way under 400.00 now. Do yourself a favor and think about what your needs are and only buy it once, if it is the magniflow then so be it, but if you want performance go JBA. Good luck either way.
