changing a truck from 2wd to 4wd

does anyone know how much it would cost and how hard it would be to change an 08 titan from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive? if its even possible. wonder if it would be cost effective to do that compared to buying a used 05ish 4x4 to play with.

Buy a 4x4 unless you want to go to hell and stay there for a spell.

from what i've read... it's not worth it at all...

it would be easier to buy a 4x4 if cost effective for you

Re: changing a truck from 2wd to 4wd

for what you will pay to buy a used yota or 05ish 4wd you will spend a lot let doing a 2wd to 4wd swap. you can get all the things you need pretty cheap from a salvage yard. tcu, ecu, t-case, front differential, cv axles. your hubs already have the splines in them for a 4wd, your dash has the light for the 4wd. i asked this question awhile back on here and not too many pos responses so i did my homework. i have yet to change mine yet cause i dont know if i want to straight axle it or not. you could probably install everything in a good weekend at worst case. the only thing i have yet to find out about is if there are any different cross members on the frame for a 4wd than there is for a 2wd. it would be easier for you to buy the ft 6" lift kit cause it has the mounts to mount your 4wd diff to as you dont have those now since you are only 2wd

Buy an old truck to play with. Then you have your nice reliable DD that hasn't been trashed and beat on, and you don't have to hold anything back when you're out wheeling because you'll be in your play toy and not the vehicle you have to drive everyday. Plus it's way easier and cheaper to find spare parts for an older vehicle when you break something, not to mention you can build another truck up to be way stronger than you could build your Titan.

if you are wanting to just make yours 4wd for daily things like snow or going up in the mountains or something, you will pay way less to put 4wd on your titan! if you want a mud buggy, buy an late model chevy or ford. like late 70's early 80's

Buy a 4x4 and push the button. It's the easiest way to switch from 4x2 to 4x4.

Re: changing a truck from 2wd to 4wd

It would probably be a lot easier to just buy a 4x4 something rather than convert a 2WD to 4WD. Probably safer too.

It would cost more than a nasty divorce. Oh...if you're married...it might cost that plus the direct cost associated with the mods.

I would go buy a used 4x4 Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0L motor. Awesome little vehicle to play with...and it has some utility.

Re: changing a truck from 2wd to 4wd

Find a SAS kit or just do it yourself. its not worth it. it could cost you easily as much to do a 4wd conversion as it would to buy a new four wheeler or an old toyota. you'd have to buy new output shafts for your tranny, a new transfer case, front driveshaft, front cvs, front diff, all the switches, and you would be in hell for a couple of weeks. the shop cost to install would pprobably be more than the parts.

you can pick everything up from a auto salvage yard for around 1500-2k. if he is mechanically inclined he can do it himself in 3-4 days max

Re: changing a truck from 2wd to 4wd

These guys seem to know more about it than me but there's probably a lot more to it than you know. The ECUs may be different, suspensions differ, frame may differ where the transfer case sits etc. I guess if you like doing that sorta stuff, have the $$$ and don't mind hacking up a new 08, go for it. Otherwise, trading it for an 08 or 09 4X4 Titan would probably be close costwise.
