This southeastern mud/clay we have makes it difficult for 4x4's as well. It is some thick stuff.
LOL, yeah... absolutely depends on what geographical location you live in. if i was there i'd definitely have gotten a 4wd, but here in the southwest, it is advantageous to have a 2wd. with a locker even more of a plus!
All you need is skills and a Detroit true trac, I have been places with 2WD more than others could dream with 4WD. I wish I could have taking pics of my sis going places that no one would believe with her 98 ford tarus. I really love my truck and it doesn't matter if she is 2WD I plan on taking her more places than she was planned on going.

I've seen people do some stuff in a 2wd that you wouldn't think would be possible. Here in the southeast, usually it's just mud that everybody offroads in. I have to admit though, the thought of going through the desert sounds like a blast.
you don't even need tru-trac to do what i've done thru the desert! it would help but i've shut many a 4x4 moron up, when they've said, "your 2wd won't make it".
