Rattling Noise (Timing Chain??)

I have a 08 titan with 43K miles runs great but when traveling at normal speeds (50-70) with very little throttle and then go to just barely give it gas there seems to be a rattling noise on and off, goes away when i get on it though.. Could it be that I have issues with my timing chain???

Re: Rattling Noise (Timing Chain??)

Some where in the 1800 to 2000. Im taking it to my bro in law he owns a shop and see what he comes up with, will post any info. Also called the dealer and they say that this has not been reported in any of the previous years but they would like to charge 110 to take it for a spin..

Re: Rattling Noise (Timing Chain??)

I doubt you have a chain issue.
It's probably pinging a little before the knock sensor can retard the spark.

Re: Rattling Noise (Timing Chain??)

That sounds about right for a dealer. My truck is still under warranty, when I took it in the dealer could hear the noise but could not find the cause. I have been looking for the cause myself but can't seem to find anything. I think it might be the intake manifold, I think there is a butterfly valve in there that might be making this noise. I can change it's intensity by slightly varying the throttle position. walleeme, the noise I have is definitely not spark knock or pinging.

Re: Rattling Noise (Timing Chain??)

I think I have the same noise. Thought I might have been a slight exhaust leak, but have ruled that out. Dealer has spent alot of time on it and cannot figure it out. Muffler shop took stuff apart and also ruled out exhaust. Happens at all rpms. It drives me insane.

Re: Rattling Noise (Timing Chain??)

Since Ive posted Ive been paying close attention and when doing about 50 to 60 the rpm's slow down to 1100-1500 and thats when the clinking noise is herd. I kind of just want to keep driving and forget about it, its driving me crazy

Re: Rattling Noise (Timing Chain??)

Sounds like pinging to me, what octane fuel are you all running? When I first got my Titan I ran 87 octane and had pinging (sounded like a rattle) under light acceleration. Went to 89 octane and haven't heard it since.

Re: Rattling Noise (Timing Chain??)

I thought it was pinging at first also. 91 make no difference and I ran it all summer.
