air bag system inop

Driving this morning, dashboard air bag light starts flashing.I stopped, shut her down, restarted. Still flashing. Passenger airbag light is operating normally.I dont see any previous threads. Any similar problems? The manual says bring it to the dealer, which I will. Before they poke around all day, I thought I would see if this has happened to anyone and the cause to try to give the service dept a heads up.
Thanks folks,
Chek6

Thanks Bestatchess.
I have tested the passenger system, even checked the accuracy of the weight sensor(pretty close). It seems fine. It is the system light in the instrument cluster which indicated a front/side/curtain problem.
I will let you know what the dealer uncovers.

This worked for me, my interpretation from manual instructions:

If you have the airbag light, it will show steady for a few seconds (the manual says 7 secs) after you turn the key from off to on (but not start) and then start to flash. Don't try to look at your watch or count seconds, as that will mess you up. Here is what worked for me:

1. Turn the key from off to on.

2. Watch the airbag light closely. It will stay on for a few secs. and then as soon as it blinks off (the start of the flashing), turn the key off instantly.

3. Count to 5 (1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi . . . .)

4. Repeat steps 1-3 two more times until you have done the cycle three times.

5. Now turn the key on and watch the light. It will start blinking in a different, slower manner. This is diagnostic mode. You can watch this for a little while, no hurry.

6. Now turn the key off again, Count to 5 like in step 3 again, and turn back on. If the procedure worked, the airbag light will not be flashing.

Mine did the same recently. Apparently there is a TSB on this issue according to my dealer's service dept and there is a fix. It will require your truck in for a day and installation of a part. Took my dealer a few hours to complete the job. No biggie.

Yes, if there is actually something wrong, it would be best to have the dealer work on it. Setting off an air bag right in your own face is a somewhat alarming experience. (Been there, done that).

Gave it a try. No dice. Still flashing. Dealer will plug it in today. I commute on a bad farm road daily. Lots of bad accidents. I feel better with the bags.
I will let you know, thanks again

I have a different problem with air bag on passenger seat if sitting all the way back in seat and legs not on seat front air bag system shows no one in seat and doesn't turn on. Saw dealer 5-14-04 and said contacting Nissan on problem but there are no other reports on this on tech/service line. They had similar problem on quest mini-van and they had to remove seat and sent back to factory to fix.
I am going to wait a week and then report to National traffic safety board - contact info in warranty service manual.

Also have another safety issue with headlight switch rotating to easily and turning off headlights when going to birght/dim or change lane signal.

Must be a non-published TSB as I just downloaded all of them and there was nothing on this.

Greg,

The customer satisfaction story about no other issues is complete crap. We've had an open case with them for well over a week on that same issue.

Our dealer's service manager told my wife to not sit in the seat. Errrrrp. Wrong answer!

We had the car in for a laundry list at service, and one of the items was the passenger air bag indicator. My wife told the service writer her weight and the situation, and the service report came back saying something to the effect of "Normal operation. Airbag will not engage when person in seat is less than 125 pounds."

When I picked the car up this afternoon, I repeatedly explained to the service writer that "my wife weighs 132 pounds". Her response was "I know." My response was "My wife weighs 132 pounds. That is greater than 125 pounds."

Needless to say, that service arrangement did not go well.

I filled out the nhtsa.gov form and reported the airbag situation. I urge you to do the same. Nissan, your customer care people are completely clueless, and regardless of the problem, the dealer answer is "NORMAL OPERATION". Sorry guys, but if it takes a federal investigation to make you address your safety issues, I'm fine with being the first person to fill out the web form.

For posterity, the text I filled out was:

"The Advanced Airbag system on our 2004 Nissan Titan disables passenger airbag when a 132 pound female is properly seated in the passenger seat. We have been able to duplicate this problem in every 2004 Nissan Titan at a local dealer's lot. Our dealer states 125 pounds on the seat sensor itself is necessary to enable the airbag, claimed there was nothing wrong and refused to run any diagnostics on the system. The Nissan website claims 47 pounds, consumer affairs states 60 pounds is necessary to enable the Advanced Airbag. It is unclear if this is pounds of pressure exerted on the seat sensor itself, or if a person of this physical weight, seated properly, would have an airbag. My 132 pound wife is exerting about 110 pounds of weight on the seat itself."

My 11 year old weighs 70 pounds. Her weight is suffcient to activate the air bag sensor system.

Hard to believe every Titan in the lot had this problem, weird.
