Puff of blue oil smoke on cold starts

Titan has 1300 miles on it and I've been noticing that the first start of the day and only after it has sat for a day, I'll see bit of blue smoke out the exhaust. This immediately clears, but is isn't comforting to see a 30000+ vehicle puff out oil smoke like an old engine with bad valve seals. I didn't contact the dealer yet as it could be still breaking in. THe smoke immediately stops. The amount of smoke is small and will only occur at the first start of the day. Do you think this is cause for concern. I'm thinking of calling the dealer about this so it's at least documented, then if it gets worse, the truck will have a history. What do you think?

At 1300 miles I believe you are past the recommended breakin period. I haven't seen this in any of my past 5 new cars/trucks. I would bring it in and check it out. I would watch them while they check it out. I would think a compreesion check is in order.

Even if it was brand new it should not have blue smoke. break in will show black residue on inside of tailpipe. If you blowing blue then there is a leak of Oil and gas somewhere. In older vehicle that would be simple too detect. With these new ones its probably not a major problem. Probably a sensor somewhere bad. Take it too the dealer, and let them know.

THanks for the replies. Can't say I'm happy, but now I know it's not just me that's having this problem. The first time I noticed it was after the truck sat for about a week. I started it and a LOT of black and blue smoke poured out. Black is understandable, but blue shouldn't happen at all. I'll be calling the dealer tomorrow.

Mike,

I'll be carrying mine in this week. Just to let you know, mine does this after not running for 5/6 hours. I'm not real happy with this either. I'll let you know what my dealer says.

That's why I got rid of my 2002 GMC Sierra. Started at 4000 mi. and used 1 & 1/2 qts. oil from Lexington, KY to Austin ,TX ( about 1200 mi). After a year of oil consumption tests, it was using a quart every 1800 mi, I started pushing for a decision or just an extended waranty. GMC customer service finally answered with if it didn't use a quart every 1000 mi it wasn't a problem regardless of the smoke and was closing my file as a dissatisfied customer and I could take it up with the BBB if I dissagreed. That was Feb. 2004. Titan purchased Feb. 2004.

It's wierd when it occurs. This morning, no smoke at all. It also doesn't seem to be using oil. Still I need to have this documented.

Mike,

A single drop of oil can make a whole lot of smoke.. chances are, you're just not burning enough oil to make a dent on the dipstick.
