Give me your opinion

I took my truck in last Friday to have the rear differential looked at. Service guy checked it out...fluid was fine, temp was OK after a drive and so on. Mechanic actually called the Service manager out to look at it while the truck was up on the rack. Long story short they said this was normal discoloration due to it being a different thickness/material than the rest of the pumpkin/axle.

I am not having any drive line issues, the only reason I checked was because of the various other threads here. I checked the fluid myself and agree with the dealer that it is full, I'm just having a little trouble accepting that this is normal.

My current thoughts are to just drive it like normal and not worry about it. Since I have reported the issue to the dealer, Nissan would have a hard time saying that it was negligence on my part for not properly servicing the vehicle. The truck currently has 3800 miles on it.

FRD ETR, It may just be a poor paint job from DANA. You might consider cleaning it up and repainting it. Use a good quality paint, and see if it gets hot enough to actually bake the paint off. I would be that it doesn't.
Good luck!

one way or another, it is not normal, either it is getting really hot, or bad paint, keep an eye on it.

i've decided to check my diff fluid quite often, it is so easy to do and gives me piece of mind.

At least I'm not the only one sensing a little B.S. going on here. Any suggestions on who to mail these pics to at Nissan?

Sounds like you need to get the Zone Manager's attention.

FRD- Since you are asking for opinions here's mine. That was good you took your Titan in to have them look at and check your final drive. It seems that both you and the dealer agree there is at this time no mechanical problem w/the final drive. I however do not agree that the discoloration is a normal condition. You need to have someone agree with that from the dealer or take it to another one and I would insist that the cover be replaced with a new one. I would keep demanding it. Hopefully you will have it replaced then you can see if it happens again. Should we all send you pictures of ours to help you in convincing them it is not normal? We can include our mileage as well to help them to see that it is not normal.

1Titan--I a appreciate your offer of help and may take you up on it.

I think I will give the dealer another opportunity and express my concern to the GM. I dealt directly with the GM when I purchased the truck and would like to give him the opportunity to get it fixed, he knew I didn't quite agree with his service dept when I left and told me to let him know if I continued to have problems. Besides I would rather not burn this bridge unless I have to which I think it would do if I went straight to Nissan. Probably won't hurt that my brother is looking at buying a Titan from the same dealer

We refurbed our propane BBQ a couple of summers ago.. I used some flat black "grill paint". Unfortunately, it seems it's also suitable for Titan differentials. Too bad you can't slap a nice juicy steak on there.

I'd contact Blackstone and get that oil analysed just to see what the situation in there is.
