Another Water Problem

Well, like smlatino and others on this board, I too am having problems with water on the front passenger floor board. Last night, I finally decided to tear the interior down and locate it (since the dealer could not). First and foremost, the water is NOT coming from the door and for that matter...can't. It is physically impossible for the water to enter at the exterior door handle and make its way into the cab. Any seams in the door are below the weather stripping at the bottom of the entry to the cab. You may be getting water in your door smlatino, but it is NOT the source of your problem. A more likely scenario are the photos that I have posted. The second one will show the condensate line exiting the truck at the firewall on the passenger side. Problem is, the condensate line only protrudes beyond the fire wall by about 1/8". Whats happening is once the water comes down the line, it exits the tube, follows the tube back about 1/2", and then drops into the cab behind a huge piece of sound deadening foam. Its pretty easy to see if this is anyones problem. Just run the A/C on high and reach down below, pull the foam grommet back that encompasses the drain line, and reach a finger up there. If this is the source, you will feel the cold water on your fingers. I am going to the dealership today. I will keep everyone posted.

After seeing for myself how the drain tube exits the fire wall, I would encourage everyone to check theirs. You don't have to pull the carpet back so its very easy to check. Even if your carpet isn't wet, there could be a very slow leak at the drain area instead of a small shower like mine. I know that it is possible for everyone to have this problem because this has nothing to do with workmanship. This is about how a particular part was manufactured, so they are the same. If you look really close in the second picture, you can see that the tube that exits the firewall barely even sticks beyond the opening in the firewall. You can also see water "back pedalling" down the tube about to drop. My fingers were sort of interrupting the whole process, but you can see that the water drop that is visible will ultimately drop to the inside of the truck...not outside.

Thanks VB

I will definitely monitor this closely. If I have to bring the truck back once more for this, I will lose. Call it whining like a little girl, or whatever anyone may like. But this is the final straw. Hopefully my problem is resolved. I will keep you posted. However, I have a feeling that the info. you gave me along with the pics make more sense than what the dealer is stating. Thanks again

I am really glad that you finally saw this thread. I just got back from the dealership and we discussed to fix. What they are going to do is put a rubber elbow at the exit point of the current condensate line where it exits the firewall. Once they do that, it is impossible for water to exit and travel back uphill in order to reenter my truck. I hated to burst you bubble but I think what you are being told is crap. Once again, your door may be leaking, but I am quite certain that that is not the source of your problem. Physics deem it virtually impossible.

This is what I mentioned earlier on this or another post by someone experiencing this problem. The Jeep Grand Cherokee I had had the exact problem with a very similar design in what you are describing to drain condensate liquid. Also the fix you are describing several replies below is just what the dealer did. The guys @ Jeeps Unlimited forum was right on it and had the fixes described and also the manufacturer had the TSB on it as well. This matter will most likely become a TSB as well as I can almost guarantee it will happen to more and more of us. Good work on investigating the problem!!!!

Thanks for the vote of confidence 1 Titan. I will assure you however, that you would have done the same had you seen the pool that was on my floorboard. Anyway, I was going to mention that I also believe that this is going to be a much larger problem than what we have seen here already. I feel as though there are a lot of people out there whose trucks have this problem and they don't know it because it isn't bad enough. I really should have posted this thread in the "General Discussion" category where more eyes would find it.

Well I second that, because I am one of them. My carpet has yet to get wet, but sure enough I pulled back the carpet and saw a small pool of water. It just was not large enough yet to soak the carpet. VShortt and TitanTalk I cannot thank you enough. Now I can head off any mildew on the carpet and rust in my floor board. Had it not been for this forum, I would not have ever noticed until the problem was severe. Thanks again. Now I am going to print the pic you posted, because I can hear the dealer now trying to weasel out of fixing it. I will probably get some excuse that, because I pulled the carpet back I caused the problem or they don't see anything wrong...its supposed to leak. Oh well, into the dungeons of Hell I go.

Sorry about your issue but I am glad that you found the thread and checked your own. I only hope that many others check because my situation turned into quite a mess. They are in the process of fixing it now. I pick up the truck around Wednesday. I will be in on Tuesday to check the work before anything is put back together. We all agreed on this so it isn't like I am planning a surprise "attack". Good luck and get it fixed...soon!

I was just wondering if "they" are going to actually replace any of your carpets and carpet materials. From your pix you seemed to have serious water seepage on to the floor.

In my opinion I think you posted in the proper category which is Problems/Dealer Service. I go straight to this category to look at problems with the Titan. The General discussion category is just too long w/general discussions and I think service issues may get lost or unnoticed. -Thanks Again!!

1 Titan

I have brought my truck back to the dealer 6 times and each time they replaced the carpet and padding. It is at the dealer right now. This is the fourth time they are actually repairing something. 1st 2 times they resealed the windshield and once they adjusted the A/C drain line. I went in to the dealer Thursday and they actually showed me where the water was coming in. I sat in the truck while they sprayed it, and it was coming through the rear door handle, down the door panel, and through the speaker. Vshortt, I went to them to explain to me how the water could come through the door panel into the truck b/c everything is designed so that if this was the case, it would drain outside, but sure enough it was coming through the speaker.

Yes I was "keeping up" with your dilemma. The path you are describing of water entering the vehicle from the rear door handle, down the door panel, and through the speaker sounds impossible but of course you seen it with your own eyes! From that point you are saying it then travels from the rear to the front? You must be getting a heck of a lot of water coming in. Since the dealer has evidently discovered the origin of the leakage and you have witnessed this evidence of leakage first hand what is next? Man you got to be frustrated I know I would be, to say the least. Also that path the water is traveling sounds like you may need to have your speaker replaced as well. Keep us posted on new developments. - Take Care!!

I too had this same problem. They told me that my heater box was cracked so water was never reaching the drain tube. They ordered a new heater box (6 weeks later). They have also agreed to replace rugs but I have had enough. I am asking for a new vehicle.
