How widespread is the rear diff issue

Is everyone having problems with their rear diffs. I only ask because I know that most of the time when people post on their forums, it isn't because their cars are working perfectly, so I just want to hear from people who have had no issues with the diff level and paint bubbling off.

I have had no problems personally, but it appears that many people who are reporting no problems have also reported that they had to fill the differential with fluid because it came from the factory not full. Maybe this is the reason that many people who potentially could have had the problem, have not. I for one have had no problems with either one, but I will say that as soon as I learned of the low fluid issue, I checked mine and sure enough, it was low and required topping off. I'm not sure if your mention of "problems with rear diffs" is a question of an actual problem, or if you are simply referring to the low fluid level. Either way, I would venture to say that those that have actually experienced overheating and diff failure are probably the ones that learned of the low fluid levels too late. In other words, their diffs would still be functioning properly today, had it not been for the fluid levels being low.

My diff was a full pinky low, drained and replaced with Mobil 1 75W90 at 500 miles. Lot of "mung" on the plug too.

By problems I was referring either to failure or the paint bubbling and such. I've read a few people who said that they topped off after the paint started to go, but have the people who topped off before noticed any problem?

I checked mine,(Front couldn't touch any - back was a little low), and had the dealer fill 3 days before I drove to TX and back, 2300 miles. I checked rear diff today for paint peel and rust/discoloration and had none.

I think others bad luck saved a lot of us from the problem.

Nissan should become a supporting partner of this site just for the $$$ that it's saved them!!!

Front and rear diffs low. Drained and refilled at 2,261 and 1,600 miles respectively. No performance problems. Paint on rear diff looks ok except for alittle cracking/seperating, but it looks more like a poor paint job than heat related issues. Looks more like when you spray paint something and put too much on it and it seperates alittle and then when dry looks not uniform. No rust or bare metal exposed on the entire diff cover.

mine was low. checked the rear at 3000 miles (thanks to this forum). had dealer fill when i brought it in for first free oil change (3300 miles). my rear diff cover is a little rusted. i told them that this problem was brought to my attention on a forum. the told me they haven't heard of this before (factory underfilling). i told them they may want to make it part of their standard inspection when performing oil changes. unfortunately, i doubt if they will. i have to bring it back in a few weeks for another issue and i'll get them to check the front then. don't know why i didn't do it with the oil change. duh!!

Does anybody that has towed heavy (5,000 or more) still have the paint in good condition on their rear diff? I am guessing that the 240 F temp resulting from heavy towing will probably bake the paint off in most cases.

Mine was born on 6/11/04 - the back diff was ok but the front was a pinky low - drained and filled both with Mobile 1 75-90w @ 750miles.
