Great site for car/truck detailing. I purchased a black KC and was going though hell trying to make this truck look great all the time. Little reading on that site went a long way!
My frustration with this truck continues. I was washing it today at a self-serve carwash and was spraying the front bumper, and a section of the paint came off. It's about the size of a golf ball. I have been washing cars/trucks for years and never have I encountered this problem. I am sure that the dealership is going to say that it was my fault somehow and try and duck responsibility, but I will not surrender that easy. It is reminiscent of the days back in the late 80's when GM could not seem to adapt to the new painting process and Beretta's and Corsica's were losing their skin all over the place.
Needless to say, I am not impressed with Nissan and or their quality controls (or lack of) at the US plant. There are many a days when I feel as if I bought one of the last cars that were made in the movie Gung Ho with Michael Keaton. You may remember the ones that were rushed through production so they could meet their quotas. If this was Nissan's first venture into producing cars/trucks it would be expected. However, since they have been in the biz for decades, I would think that some of these commonalities that go into every vehicle, such as the painting process they would have a better handle on the process. I guess if they don't want repeat buyers, than there business plan is working.
Yes I recall all those vehicles with the clear coat stripped off b/c I had a Dodge van that came apart. It seems the big 3 were experimenting with lower VOC paints and blew it big time. Class action suits followed but unless someone told you about the proceedings you were SOL.
I have not taken my truck to the dealership about the paint job... however i am incouraged by my dealerships customer service thus far... I emailed my dealerships general email and got an email back about they would be in contact with me shortly etc.... two days later i got an apologetic call at work from my salesman about how he was out yesterday and he's so sorry he couldn't call me until (today)... (i thought wow that is pretty nice even if he is making it up) anyways i told him about my problems, mudflaps loose, overhead console cracked, discoloration of paint on the tailgate and the general crappy paint job from the factory (orange-peel)... he said to bring the truck down and they'll have a look at it as i obviously have justified concerns that should be fixed (he sounded real-standup) (I have to admit for a car dealer I trusted this cat from day one)... Anyways, today I was washing my truck and opened the hood to check the fluids... when I closed the hood, where my hand was on the hood there is now a small dent from the pressure of my hand on the hood!!! bogus.. one more problem... also the orange peel on my truck is bad enough, today I noticed that the area around the "rocker panel" (extreme underbelly of paint on the sides) is incredibly buckled, almost as if it has been rusting underneath the paint job or it's just a real bad fit and finish problem, regardless, I am going to the dealership asap and will see what they can do. (maybe since my G/F wants a pimped out altima that will help there decision)
I waxed mine a week ago, not saying any of you guys are making these QC issues up, but mine is perfect. I worked as a professional detailing cars for a year and the stock paint on my Nissan is as good or better than anything I have seen.
As far as the body panels being thin are concerned, well, I agree. You can hear sprinkles hitting the roof when stopped at a traffic light, however, just growing pains I guess. As long as I can still beat a stock Ford, Dodge, or GM to the next light; I will live with the thinner panels.
My only real complaint if it is such a thing, the frame and front suspension are too stiff compared to most trucks. When going over several bumps in a row the vibration seems exacerbated throughout the frame because there is no "give." I also have the Daystar 2.5 inch kit in, but I don't think it really changed the ride any. I also get a very slight steering wheel shimmy at exactly 64 mph, but it never lasts more than a second.
However, 9K was a little more than I wanted to spend. Hell, I can get an AL block, heads, forged crank, and a wicked fuel system for 9K. Of course, this still leaves me short on a superb tranny and transfer case, and I wouldn't mind having that rearend because of the disk brakes. Oh well, it will be a year or so before I am ready for the transplant anyways. 1890 miles and I love the truck. No real problems to speak of to date.
Mine is fine, the couple of small flaws I have seen while waxing I can never find again without a detailed search. Clearcoat on the paint was thick enough to take a scratch you could catch your thumbnail in and get wet sanded out to look fine.
I have "orange peel", but only at areas under doors subject to abuse, I have taken this to be a protective coating as it is uniform and noticiably heavier.

I've found small black specks by the back of the cab,the roof, doors, and windshield..at first I thought it was tar from the road..but there wasn't any one the front bumper,hood..so I took some bug/tar remover and started to clean..it comes off..but you have to work at it..I was thinking could this be residue from the bedliner sprayers? I called the dealer before starting to clean it on my own..they were like oh yeah bring it in maybe we can buff it out..no thanks..I'll do it myself..that's all I need is for them to destroy the clearcoat..it's a labor of love to be sure..anyone else have anything like this? Other than that..my paintjob is fine.
I have a question sort of related to this topic....
What is cleaner wax? Is it the wax that is sprayed on your car at the car wash (not self serve)? I am vertically challenged and have been taking my armada to a car wash/detail shop to be cleaned.... I've been told that the wax they spray on is bad for my truck.
yes I have noticed thin/dry paint in a few not so important places, one spot on the lower rear door jamb is actually so thin you can see the yellowish primer showing through.
BTW I've noticed paint missing along one of the roof gutters, the gutter is also a seam between the roof and the frame over the doors, some kind of hard rubbery stuff so it can flex I guess.
I have a 2006 Titan (16,000 miles), which I love, but I noticed that I keep getting paint scratches that should not be there. I really take care of this vehicle.
I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 120,000 miles that has been off road that has fewer scratches than the Titan. Same with my 2001 Honda.
After reading the posts, it seems as if Nissan has a problem with the overall paint job on the Titans.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I suggest that we call the automotive and general media (newspaper consumer advocates) if Nissan does not offer a solution. If Nisson wants the same reputation for shoddy paint jobs as General Moters and other American companies, so be it. But it's a shame, the overall product is quite good.
when i bought it (2 months ago) the was no real artifacts in it like fisheye, runs in the paint, but orange peel? yeah, baaaad orange peel on the sides. not would i would expect from a new truck.
i want some suggestions/advice on getting a new paint job. i'm looking at a Titan that's a copper color, but if i get it, i want to paint it black, any advice on this? would the new paint job hold up as well?
If you are getting your truck repainted, I recommend a place that's been around awhile and does newer vehicle repairs. I'm sure there are some guys from OK that can recommend a good paint guy.
