Annoying Grind

I recently began to notice a slight grind. It sonds kinda like a rusty wheel on a wheel barrel or wnindmill. It is heard when the wheels are in motion and only when the windows are up. It seems to increase and decrease with speed. Took it into the dealer. They said a tech test drove it and everything was normal. They gave me a free oil change. Needless to say I was not satisfied and talked to the manager the next day. I brought it back in and had the same tech ride with me to pinpoint the noise. The tech acknowledged the noise which he said he has never heard before he thought it might be comming from the drive train. It is currently being serviced. Dealer called back and told me they were working on the brakes (rotors/pads) and were checking the suspension bolts. I know from this great site that some have experienced warped rotors. Has anyone here experienced this type of grind? She only has 4,000 miles on her and I hope its just brakes and nothing more serious. Hope the problem can be solved. I love the truck just dont wanna be driving something that sounds like a bucket of bolts.

Just spoke with the dealer and he tells me they repaired the front and rear brakes but the sound is still there. They acknowledge the sound but can't seem to find the source. Has anyone else experienced anything like this. Im afraid they are gonna tell me the same BS that it's normal and ill just have to live with it. I love the truck but am not going to drive something that sounds like a rusty wheel barrel.

Have they checked the rear differential? There was someone on this forum that had
their rear diff go out, thought they mentioned a grind at a certain speed. I think it was
one of the moderators. This may not be the source, but seems like the only grind type issue I remember on this site. Good Luck!

A"grind" sounds serious. Is it like gears grinding? I guess it's not like a scraping or rubbing type noise. Is it there all the time? Sounds perhaps that it is not as the first time the dealer did not here the noise. Does it go away after a warmup? After a few miles? After you press the brakes for a while? Does it go away when you turn in a certain direction?

The sound you described reminded me of when I once owned a four wheel drive Chev.
I had it in the service dept. about 6 times before they determined that it was a faulty front wheel bearing.

Did they repair the brakes because they were just troubleshooting or did they actually find something wrong with the brakes?

1Titan I guess you could say it's more of a scraping noise. Thats why I thought It was the brake pads rubbing the rotors. It does not go away but increases in decreases with speed. It cannot be heard with the window down or during acceleration, only when you let off the gas. It's real subtle but it is there none the less. The sound does not go away after warm up and or after you press the brakes. I think you can only hear it from inside the cabin. It is not a constant scraping noise and is associated with the rotation of the wheels or the rotation of the drive shaft or something else that rotates and scrapes at a certain point which increases and decreases with speed. Thanks for the advice, i will have them check the bearings and diffs.

caltitan, a little of both. The brakes were starting to squeek and I told them about the rotor issue that i learned from this site so i guess they hoped for a quick fix. Unfortunately that didn't do it. The dealer has been really good so far , offering a rental car and all. Ive bought 3 nissans from them in the past three years and this is my only problem so im assuming they don't wanna lose a great customer. I have a company car so transportation isn't an issue. I just really miss driving my Titan. Hope to have her back soon.

I just drove my Titan from North Florida to Long Island and started to notice the same type noise when I got here. It seems to happen only after the truck has been driven for an hour or so. It makes a scrunch, scrunch, scrunch type noise when going slow that speeds up and slows down with the rotation of the wheels. It can only be heard with the windows up. To me it sounds like the cords have separated in one of the tires but does not effect the ride quality, I hope it's not anything serious I have to drive back to Florida with 4 kids on Monday. Thank god for the video system I had installed in the headrests before I left.

That's a challenging (noise) problem to resolve. Good thing is that the dealer heard it as well. Could very well be the bearings keep us posted.

Just got word from the dealer that they have not been able to pinpoint the problem yet. They have now gone to Nissan engineering for help. Nissan advised them to start with the bearings as they apparently have had problems with them. I dont recall hearing of any problems with bearings on this site. They had to order the parts which wont be in for a colple of days. Hopefully this will solve the problem. Ill keep you posted.

I think somebody posted about slop in the driveshaft carrier. I don't know if that would make an intermittent noise or not.
