2004 fuel filter problems?

I have a 2004 Titan and when i'm driving it seems as though it isn't getting any gas. It just putts, almost like its giving out of gas even though I know there is plenty of gas in it. It only happens after I drive somewhat long distances( 2 hrs + ). But today it did it after only about 30 mins. It occurs when I speed up to either pass someone or go uphill. Also, it seems to do fine until I reach about 40 mph. Has this happened to anybody else? Please help. thanks!

Re: 2004 fuel filter problems?

I hear the filter is located in the gas tank. I feel my mileage is bad right now but still runs and pumps fine. What else shoul I chane to get better mileage? Spark plugs? Anything else? Has 150,000 miles on her looking for another 150,000

The filter is not really anything more than a mesh/sponge at the fuel pump. At 150K miles change the spark plugs, pcv valves.

Wouldn't hurt to replace the fuel pump either. That thing has ate through alot of fuel over 150k miles and might be getting week.

The fuel pump either works or not; no reason to change it till it fails.

In a perfect world yes, but pumps will get weak and start to lose there ability to put out the correct PSI which can lead to hesitation/starving for fuel. There is a port on the fuel injection rail for checking the PSI.

Re: 2004 fuel filter problems?

Have you tried any fuel additives such as, STP, Slick-50, Lucus etc.?

Re: 2004 fuel filter problems?

I'm guessing you have a bigger issue going on and those things won't help. When has the last time have you had the truck in for a complete tune up ? I would do that first if it's been a long time and I would still have the fuel PSI I checked to make sure it's not the fuel pump going out.

Fuel Pump is on the way out. Mine did the same thing and it only gets worse with time. It only would act up on a long drive or under a heavy load. Local auto parts store should have a pump for about $200. Get that tank as low as possible, a jack and a good friend, and its not a big job. Hope this helps

Would yours rev like normal, in neutral or park? I'm 99% sure my pump is going out, it only acts up above 2800-3000 rpms... Perfectly fine out of gear though.
