Battery Drain?

Hey everybody, i have a 84 month Nissan battery that every once in a while will die randomly when i try and crank it over.

I have my stereo system and an aftermarket alarm, but the stereo system draws no power when off, and the alarm does almost nothing.

Me and my dad were doing test on it, we would start the truck, and take the neg off, and the truck didnt hesitate at all, so the alternator is fine.

Battery is full with the water, and we have a "gravity tester" which showed the battery was perfectly okay.

But we turn the truck to ACC, so things come on, but the motor was off, and we played the stereo with the headlights/highbeams on. And the battery died within 30 sec. After 30 sec, the stereo would power off, then come back on, and the motor wouldn't turn at all, just CLICK CLICK CLICK.

So the battery is holding a charge, enough for it to sit for a few hours, and sometimes overnight, but it drains VERY quickly with external power.

Is the battery bad? I was thinking about going with a Duralast Gold from AutoZone for $112 w/ 3 year replacement warranty.

What else could it be?

Re: Battery Drain?

Your OEM battery has lasted along time. Many don't make it 84 months!

Sure sounds like a battery that is on it's last leg.

The Duralast battery should be just fine.

Why is there never enough time to do it right the first time,
But always enough time to do it again?

Re: Battery Drain?

Sorry, I misread your first sentence. I thought it said 84 months old.

Take the battery to autozone and have it load tested.

It still sounds like you have a battery with a weak cell.

Re: Battery Drain?

Your battery has a bad cell.
Load test will prove it.

Re: Battery Drain?

Well if its an 84 month battery, could i take it to nissan and they would trade it out for a new one?

Probably.
There has got to be some kind of warranty.
It is not uncommon for a cell to go bad and when it does, it does exactly what you described.

Re: Battery Drain?

walleeme is dead on. You've got a bad cell. Funny thing is, batteries with bad cells will gravity just fine, but they discharge ultra quick. Sometimes, you can put one on to charge, and charge it well through past when it should be fully charged, and the bad cell will clear. Not totally positive why, but I think bad cells are oxidized lead plates, and when you overcharge the battery, it will finally break through the oxidation and end up cleaning off the plate, rendering the cell workable. That might be totally off base, though. If you decide to overcharge the battery, be sure it's well ventilated, and the caps are off, so it won't explode.

If the battery is "new" from Nissan (and not a pull out or a second/blem) you should be good on a warranty. Don't read too much into my concern about seconds/blems, as most dealers wouldn't do that without notifying you. It did happen to a friend of mine once, though, and he got shafted on the warranty in that deal. Of course, he doesn't do business with those folks anymore, and neither do a lot of the rest of us, so what comes around goes around.

Re: Battery Drain?

Yeah, its just a battery tender so its charging at 2 amps. But the charger says its already fully charged, im just leaving it on just in case. If it clears the oxidation, then great, but this will be the second time ive charged it overnight.

And when i bought the truck, it was from a Honda dealer but its got a sticker 04/10 which is the date they installed it. So i believe its an original battery. The honda and nissan dealers are right next door too

Re: Battery Drain?

Bad battery... replace and it will be good. Once you have completely discharged a conventional battery, it is usually done for.

Re: Battery Drain?

Been there done that. My battery tested perfect, the store even put a load tester on it repeatedly and everything supposedly checked out ok. Problem solved with a new one.
