Angry Radio / Nav Problem...

Ok, first off, I did a search for this, but found nothing.... so forgive me if this is covered elsewhere.

This morning I got into my Titan, and the radio and Nav systems controls didn't respond. I couldn't use the steering wheel audio controls, nor the dials on the unit. In addition, the joystick and buttons on the nav system were unresponsive, yet the screen is lit and went to the MPG info. The only thing I could get to work was the CD eject button. I figured it was a temporary glitch, so I drove to work with the music stuck at blaring. Once I got to work, I turned the truck off, let it sit for a couple minutes and turned it back on... same problem. About an hour later I got an idea and went back out and turned it back on. Same problem again, but this time I tried the audio controls in the backseat, which worked fine! I tried the front controls yet again, to no avail.

That's where my problem stand now... any ideas anyone?

It sounds as if a connector came loose from the rear of the head unit.

Great... I haven't searched yet, but is this something I can fix myself easily, or is it difficult enough that a visit to the stealership is needed?

The front panel pulls off (don't use anything to pry it off). Unhooking the connectors to the front panel is the hardest part. Four screws and you can pull out the HU. Next to the wiring harnesses the hardest part is stuffing the wiring back in behind the HU when you put it back together.

Thanks for the advice. I went out at my lunch with the intention of ripping the dash apart, but lo and behold, the damn thing has decided to start working correctly again. No telling what was wronf this morning, that fixed itself this afternoon.

Thanks again for the advice!

Wtf?

OK, here's a little brief on my continuing problems with this issue. As I said in my last post, when I got back in my truck later in the day the radio and nav controls worked just fine. Later on that day, I ran around town, went to watch MNF, and everything worked fine the entire time. Now, the next morning, I got in my truck to go to work and once again there was no response from the controls. Again, later in the day when I went to lunch, and then home, everything worked fine. Now, here in the desert where I live, it's just begining to cool off. The past few mornings have been cold, if you consider the high 40's cold. So today, when I started my truck, again no response. I fired up the heater all the way while I let the truck warm up, which I usually don't even bother turning on (the heater, that is). Once I was ready to get going, I tried the controls again, but still no reponse. However the cabin was nice and toasty, so I turned off the truck, fired it back up, and lo and behold the controls worked! So, does anyone think it is possible that this is a cold/heat related issue somehow? I still haven't ripped the dash apart to check for loose connections, as it seems to work fine later on in the day, no matter if I drive on road or bounce the truck around off road. It all seems somewhat strange to me, so I thought I'd share.

I can't believe I'm the only one having this problem............ Now that it's cooling down, I have no control over my radio and NAV each morning.

No one else out there is having this issue?

I leave my truck outside occasionaly and recently is has gotten down to the mid 20s overnight. I have had no problem with the controls when starting it in the morning. I still think it is a loose connector and maybe the fact it works when warm/hot and not when it is cold will give the dealer something more to think about.

Well Hell. I guess I'll tear the damn thing apart after all. I've been trying to avoid the stealership, as the one here in town is... sh!tty, to say the least.

If I had to bet on a loose connector, I would bet on the the connector for the Radio/NAV control buttons that is on the back side of the plastic dash cover that covers the central region of the dash in front of the head unit.

I have to admit, being of the lazy sort I haven't tried to tear my dash apart and look for a loose connector yet. I shall try to get out there today and do it....

nav

The first day I got the truck the radio & nav controls stopped working,I have had the truck for one month and have 1k miles on it & yesterday they stopped again. I called the dealer, they have no clue, I put 100 miles on it today and it never happened. This should be interesting!

ps I do think the heat in the cab has something to do with it.

Well, I know for a fact that mine is temperature related. When it is cold in the cab, nothing works. I have to heat up the cabin, then restart the truck to get things going.

I tore apart my dash looking for loose connections, like numerous people suggested, but found nothing.

So far, there's only two of us having this problem? I find it hard to believe! I guess it's better than some other peoples problem, but on a truck that costs nearly 40K, I don't think I should have to deal with this crap.

Once again, I beg you, the accumulated knowledge of the board, to bless me with your wisdom! :: bows ::
