stranded...thanks to dealer

well, this made my weekend for sure.

i have an appointment this morning to replace the window switch thanks to the auto-up problem and recent tsb. i also ask them to check the parking brake because the truck rolls when the brake is on, and there's little to no resistance when pressing the pedal.

they adjust the brake, and i go from the dealer to the mall, and to eat lunch, and then start heading for home (out of town.) i get 3 miles out of town, and get the truck up past 55 mph, and the truck is shaking and resistant to acceleration. i pull over, and do a visual inspection. when i get to the rear passenger wheel, .....you guessed it: burning smell. they overadjusted the brake, so i have undoubtedly burned up the rotor. or rather i should say they have burned up my rotor.

and it's the typical scenario: service dept has gone home, got to tow it. no loaner from the dealer, no rental car places open (this was about 3:30pm), and no one at 1800nissan1.

this is the second time i've had to make a secondary visit to the dealer because they screwed up a warranty repair. and it's two different dealers, so i can't really win i guess. if someone has a page number in the book about coverage for towing, car rental, expenses and so on for warranty or dealer error, please let me know. i tried to find it, but wasn't really in the mood to sit down and read. thanks.

I would think this would be a relatively easy sell to get the dealer to atleast reimburse you for a rental and tow. It sounds to me that you have had the same dealer experiences that I have had. Good luck!

How does the E-brake work with disc brakes? I know how the shoes spread holding the leading (primary) shoe against the drum style but can't visualize what happened to you. I would have just loosened up the cable and called it a day.

well, i don't know how the whole system works. all i know is he took off the back wheels to adjust the brakes. whatever it was, it caused the burning of the brake on the rear pass side.

if you take the rotors off of the rear axles you'll find that the backside of the rotor is shaped like a drum and there will be one or two shoes that are only engaged by the e-brake/parking brake cable. so it's kind of like a drum brake on one side and a disk brake on the other.

well, i got my truck back today. the dealer drove the 35 miles to pick me up, and they reimbursed my towing bill. as i suspected, rear pass. side parking brake was stuck on the rotor. they say they inspected it and the rotor was ok, so he just readjusted the brake. drives fine, and i just hope there truly is no damage to the back side of the rotor.
