Evap volume control knocking.

Anyone had this service done?

What I hear I wouldn't call "knocking"... More like a tapping. Kind of like a valve out of adjustment just not RPM dependent.

Inside the cab at idle and not all the time it sounds like a helicopter way off in the distance. Not a ticking sound just a muffled "thump-thump-thump-thump-thump-thump-thump-thump" with a beat of about 2 or 3 times a second.

I'm sure this is the problem but the description of "knocking" is throwing me.

Hate to say this but it's normal, it'll goes on/off for certain time/temp.

You can try to mount it somewhere else away from the body to "lessen" the noise but it's stills there.

Even after the TSB has been done?

I am SOOOOO MOTHER FREAKING PISSED at Town Center Nissan Kennesaw Georgia right now.

I went in this AM with a copy of the service bullitan. Told them what was wrong. First thing that rubbed me the wrong way is the guy said that he'd have to let it warm up to hear it. I told him "no, the TSB tells how you can turn it on with the computer so you can hear the noise." Dude didn't listen to me and left it outside his bay for 30 minutes idling.

He then comes back an hour later and tells me: "It's normal. We have another 04 here and it makes the same noise. There's no service bullitan to fix it. We even called Nissan and they say there's not one."

WHERE THE HOLY HELL DID I GET THE PRINTED PAGES WITH PICTURES, CODES, AND PART NUMBERS?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

I was so pissed I just took my keys and left. I'm on hold with 1800Nissan1 right now.

I will NEVER buy a new vehicle again.

Amazing how 1800Nissan1 had no trouble locating the TSB.
They're calling the dealership now.

Town Center Nissan is probably the worst dealership on the planet. I took mine in for this noise before they knew what it was ie, tsb. And they flat out lied to me about the fix, then it took them 35 minutes to even find my truck on the lot. (Guess what? It was in the service bay!)

Not from Town Center yet.
1800Nissan1 was pretty nice about it.

I called them and didn't even load the question. I said I have an 04 Titan that's making a noise. I did tell them that it seemed to be coming from the evap line. The guy on the other end says "good news! There's a TSB to fix exactly what you're describing. Just take your truck to your dealer and they'll fix you right up."... My reply began "Oddly enough,".

He said that my file number was linked to the TSB and that I should give them that file number when I called them again. I'd been talking to the guy on the phone the whole time and was pretty comfortable with him. I said "You don't want me calling them right now." He laughed and said he'd call them and have them call me back.

They haven't called yet. When I feel I have complete control of my emotions I'll give the service manager a call. Anyone know anyone up there?

Town Center Nissan in Kennesaw Georgia needs to raise its collected IQ a few points by firing a few people.

I would like to say I'm still completely estatic about the truck. I blame all this on the dealership. Hell the fact that nissan would even have a TSB to correct such a small noise that most people would ignore (but drives me nuts) speaks loads to me.

My letter:

Sirs,

Had an interesting morning in your service department.

I’d called yesterday about a small but annoying thumping / knocking noise the 04 Titan I’d purchased there had developed. I’d done a bit of research on the internet and discovered a Nissan Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) that covered the exact noise I was hearing and the repair: http://www.infinitihelp.com/Ownershi.../NTB04-124.htm

When I arrived at 7:30 this morning, I was told there’d be a bit of a wait for the techs to get in and get settled. No worries. I described the noise to the service rep and showed him the copy of the TSB I’d brought.

I won’t describe the two hour wait while my truck was looked at (30 minutets of which involved it sitting, idling outside of the service bay) because it’s easily eclipsed my last few minutes in the service department:

I was told the “good news”: yes they had replicated and located the cause of the sound. It was the solenoid described in the TSB I brought, but that they had taken a similar 04 off the lot and it also made that noise. That it was “normal”. Here’s the weird part: “that we know of no TSB to fix that noise. We called Nissan and they don’t have a TSB nor have ever heard of one for this problem”. That’s odd: I’ve spoken with several people on the internet that have had this problem and had it fixed with this TSB. Not to mention I’d given the service coordinator a copy of the TSB (you can see in the link above that it contains drawings, part numbers, billing instructions, codes for the diagnostic computer and even a Nissan disclaimer!) and saw the tech look at it whilst diagnosing the problem!

Anything I would have said at that time would have been no value to anyone. Plus I wanted to double check the information I’d given the tech. After verifying the information I called 1800Nissan1 for assistance. When I described the issue I was having with my truck the customer support rep checked his computer and said “Good news Mr. Stewart, there’s a technical service bulletin that fixes the exact problem you’ve described. All you need to do is take your truck to your dealer and…” My reply began “Oddly enough,…” There is a file opened with 1800Nissan1 concerning this issue. They were to have been in contact with you by now.

So, where do we go from here? Even after having the battery fail on me 2 weeks after buying the truck (which, by the way, was only a little over a month ago), I am still ecstatic about my Titan. I am currently less thrilled with the service I’ve been receiving from Town Center Nissan. I’m the person in my circles that people seek opinions from. As an engineer at Lockheed, Air Force Reserves aircrew veteran (Dobbins) and the owner of a professional motorcycle roadrace team I have knowledge and experiences that people have learned to rely upon and trust. I also am the type of person that can usually find good in people and companies. Tasks that are becoming exceedingly difficult to do with Town Center Nissan. Especially after having ½ my work day wasted at your site and subsequently on the phone w/ Nissan when your coordinators and technicians have clearly made a mistake.

Please convince me this was all a misunderstanding; that it will be rectified as soon as possible; I will be compensated for my time; and that you will make me a happy, satisfied customer.

Thank you,

Craig A. Stewart

Wow...that is the single most well crafted piece of literature I have every read for a complaint letter/email. I am VERY impressed.

I am even more STUPIFIED at the service center there. I know my Nissan service manager by name up here but only because I chit chat with him randomly during oil changes and minor repair stuff (had a rusty tow hook they fixed) for example. But, I know without a doubt I can walk in w/ a TSB and he'll take care of it, whether it was on my old Maxima or on my new Titan. I would say keep documenting everything and don't be afraid to walk in there and into one of the offices of either the sales manager or finance manager, especially if they are in the middle of closing a deal.

They will be more than happy to fix your issue if you are airing the problem in front of other customers or potential customers.

I worked in customer service/retail for WAY TOO LONG and I know as a former manager or employee how damaging/embarrassing an unruly customer can be in front of other customers or potential customers.
Good luck!!

I guess I should've read this post before posting this:

http://www.titantalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18401

I also called Nissan Consumer Affairs and they confirmed the bulletins existance even though Sheehy Nissan's Master tech said it was an invalid bulletin number. I'm just going to check the part. The old part looks alot different then the new part. The only thing that concerns me is the bulletin says Titan (A60). Is that an engine code? My engine code is K56.

A60 and TA60 are the codes for the vehicles themselves. If a part number is specific to that vehicle it'll usually have that code contained in it somewhere.

Pathfinder is a R50, Xterra a WD22 and the Frontier a D22.

I assume K56 is the engine code.

Good luck with yours also.
