I just installed an electronic brake controller in my truck. The controller had 4 wires coming from it. The brake controller jumper harness included with my truck (part of towing package) had 5 wires. In making the wiring connections, I combined the brown/white wire and the red/blue wire from the harness together and connected them to the corresponding wire from the brake controller. This is a mistake, at least with my type of brake controller. The red/blue wire is labelled "brake controller illumination" and was not needed for my application. When connected like I did, when the brake pedal is pushed, the lights on the radio go dim. Also, when I turned on the headlights, the red light on the controller comes on, which is not supposed to happen unless the brake is applied. I could also hear a slight buzzing sound when I pushed the brake pedal. I disconnected the red/blue wire and everything works fine. No damage done.
I also found a perfect place for mounting the brake controller. My truck has the center console. There is a small panel along the side of the console, under the dash, with a sqaure opening in it. This panel easily pops off and there is nothing behind it to interfere with screws. I installed the brake controller on the panel while I had it out of the truck on my workbench and simply popped it back in with the controller attached. The wires then ran through the square opening and looped back under the dash to the pre-wired brake controller harness connector, which is located under the dash, above the parking brake.
Attached is a picture of the finished installation. Hopes this helps someone else.
