I'm getting a grinding noise in my dash when I move the heater control knob form heater to defrost. I also get it when I first start the truck. Any one had similiar problem? The dealer said he'll have to pull the whole dash to get at the airflow control damper. This should be good. I don't have any rattles yet but I can't wait to see what happens after they pull the dash and put it back together.

I get the same exact thing, although I haven't been to the dealer yet. I figure I'd try to see what I can do while I have the dash apart for an audio install. I believe this topic has been brought up a couple times, might try to do a search.
Yeah, I don't think I want to mess with this one. According to the service manual, here's what must be removed:
REMOVAL
1. Discharge the refrigerant from the A/C system.
2. Drain the coolant from the engine cooling system.
3. Remove the cowl top extension.
4. Remove the exhaust system.
5. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
6. Disconnect the high/low pressure pipes from the expansion valve.
7. Move the two front seats to the rearmost position on the seat track.
8. Remove the instrument panel and console panel.
9. Remove the steering column.
10. Disconnect the instrument panel wire harness at the RH and LH in-line connector brackets, and the fuse block (J/B) electrical connectors.
11. Disconnect the steering member from each side of the vehicle body.
12. Remove the heater and cooling unit assembly with it attached to the steering member, from the vehicle.
13. Remove the heater and cooling unit assembly from the steering member.
Been there, done this, truck surrvived to run another day. Dealer replaced and or performed service for the side link assembly errrrrrrrrr mode motor control is what they called it. Did not seem to be a big deal. Still making a sound as if something does not have a full turn radius. Not as bad as before though. No new rattles.
We'll see what happens Monday. They already told me it may take a few days. Also getting brakes done.

I'm confused... When I bought the truck it made that noise from the get-go.. I've never owned nor driven a foreign model truck, so I thought that might be normal... loud fuel pump or something to that effect... Now all of a sudden the noise stops! Now I'm wondering if something is wrong.. oh yeah, it's the sound of the damper opening (or closing)(now I know since I've read several posts about it) whenever you turn the key right before you crank the motor up. Could something be wrong now that it doesn't make that noise any more or could it have fixed itself(I know that sounds crazy, but anything's possible) maybe worked itself in since I've only got 700 miles on the truck as we speak...
Please, if ya'll have ideas please let me know. I'm taking it to the dealer regardless, since there's a broken piece below my headlight that they're gonna replace.

Well is the a/c on or off when you do it?
If it's off you won't hear it, if it's on you will.
