If I had to get rid of my Titan today for mechanical, I wouldn't hesitate and go for a 2005 Titan, or even an 05 Fronty (although it would be hard going from full size down)....if I was thoroughly upset at Nissan and thought they were the anti-christ, probably back to a Tundra, or even just go back for an actual car, probably a Mazda 6 or Toyota Camry. Who knows - don't think about it much since I don't have have any serious problems. I do like the appearance of GMC Sierras and Ford F250s but I vowed to never buy an American car (ie Ford/GM/Dodge). To each their own

so my titan is in the shop for the third rear diff. im lettin her go. loved her but enough is enough. need help picking a new truck.
If you don't need full size, Tacoma DoubleCab.
I have a 99 standard cab, and if the Titan is half as reliable, I'll be satisfied. Here is what I've had to do to the Tacoma in 5 years:
Clean the intake flapper causing notchy feeling gas pedal.
Replace tires.
Thats it. Other than routine maintenance, this truck has not needed one thing. Not a belt, not a fuse, not a light bulb, nothing.
It has about 60,000 on it, and it's about due for brakes. Amazing.
Maybe if you need a full size, but don't need all the power of the Titan, you should look at the Tundra. I couldn't imagine a better "rebound" brand to get over a bad experience. I looked at the Tundra Double Cab before I got my Titan, but they were just a little bit too expensive. That was also why I passed up the new Double Cab Tacoma. I got my Titan when the new Tacoma was first released, and the dealer had one for 27K, no haggling. I really needed a 4 door truck, and I loved the Titan on the test drive, so that was the end of my Toyota (and Chevy) shopping.
The other truck I would consider would be the new Frontier, maybe the Tundra.

3 rear diffs? What the hell? I wonder what the odds of that are?
If you buy a Z71, you might get a very nice truck, OR you might get a piece of crap with piston slap (lots of info on that around the web) and leaky everything. I know lots of guys with Z71 who have never had a problem, so you'd probably be fine.
For reliability, it's hard to beat a Toyota. I had a Tundra, and several other Toyota trucks before that. They're pretty bulletproof. The Tundra with 282HP moves out pretty well, too.
Good luck.

The Chevrolet piston slap was finally corrected in the 2003 year models, hard to believe GM could get by with that from 99 to 02 models, but they did? Gm calls it a carbon knock and I know of a couple with over 100k. I also had a Z-71 with the 5.3 and the knock and it get much better fuel mileage than the Titan.

If you don't already have one, maybe consider just buying a Nissan extended warranty, (instead of selling, so you don't loose money for selling so soon), and keep the truck until the 2006 or 2007 Titan comes out, then trade it in on one. Any issues should be resolved by then.
If you are considering a lemon law case, maybe you can get a warranty instead for free.
I don't recommend a Z71 when I can go look up the # of TSBs for them and find 80+ TSBs for 2004 models, NO THANK YOU.
The new Tacomas or Fronty's are pretty sharp but if you are wanting full size I have faith in Nissan and say the Titan still. I think the lemon law should get you a new Titan here anyways given this will be your third rear end, right?
Tundra is your only other option in my opinion, BTW...
GM is working on a complete redesign for 2006 or 2007. If you want a Chevy/GMC, I would wait for that...
Right now, I wouldn't trade my truck for any other 1/2 ton truck. That doesn't mean that I think it is perfect, but it works for me, and is fun to drive.
I would go test drive the others, then decide.

I use to have a 2001 Z71 loved it, no problems at all.
Yea I know what comments are next so here's my answer, I'm just a truckaholic and trade them quick.
But I really love my Titan and it's been trouble free too.
I'll get a Ford PSD next, have you seen what kind of HP those things make aftermarket.
I went with a Ram 4x4 Hemi after my Titan went through 3 sets of rotors in 22,000 miles. 9,000 miles since December 1st, not a single issue - so far so good. Whatever you pick - Drive What You Like & Like What You Drive.
