4WD Problem

Recently after having my truck in 4wd the transfer case made a horrible grinding noise. When I switched out of 4wd the truck would not go into gear. Buddy had to rock the truck back and forth, restarted and it was fine. Took to dealer and of course they could not find any problem. Anyone else had this problem? Also have rattle in dash on driver side every time you hit bump with front right tire?

Question 4 wheel hi or lo into 2 WD??????

hey tdog........welcome to TT........there are some threads around that you can search on the issue. Someone recently found the bolts were loose on their transfer case.tightned and fixed. check that first..check the fluid....and check your dealer on that. Was that 4 wheel hi to 2 wheel or from the 4 wheel lo position to 2 WD ???which takes more steps to clear back to 2 wd. Let us know. Are you sure it is the transfer case??

I personally wouldn't worry about it. The way I understand it going into or out of 4WD you have to mesh or "unmesh" gears in the transfer case using an electric solenoid without the benefit of a clutch. 4Lo requires an additional mating of gears. Bound to be a situation once in awhile where things don't line up perfectly but a slight movement of the truck resolves the problem.

The other day I went to put truck into 4Lo to pull out a tree stump. No problem going into 4Hi but turning the knob to 4Lo (stopped, transmission in neutral, foot on brake), major gear ginding noise from transfer case. Immediately switched back to 2Hi, pulled ahead six inches and repeated steps to go into 4Lo and no problem, no noise.

First time this has happened out of 10-12? times engaging 4WD and until it happens more often that that, I will accept the advantages of a knob on the dash to engage and disengage 4WD.
