Locked Side Box

Just purchased a used 2009 Pro-4 Crew 4x4. The locking side box will not open. The Nissan dealer wouldn't offer a solution. A locksmith took a quick look (the usual pushing and turning the key. The key is not sticking and felt like it was performing properly). The locksmith was at a loss and feels he could not do anything without know the type of locking mechanism that is installed. Yes, it is the right master key. Only cost me $300.00 from the local dealer to get it made. I took it upon myself to cut a hole on the backside of the plastic box thinking something inside must be jamming the box door. To my surprise there is nothing inside. What I did see is the locking mechanism seems to be a small vertical rod? Turning the key doesn't move it. WD40 in the lock and coating the vertical rod locking mechanism doesn't get the job done either. "Does anyone have a diagram detailing the lock mechanism"? If I can get one perhaps a good locksmith has a solution to gain entry and fix it so it is usable again....Any assistance would be appreciated...............THX

Your latch assembly is seized. This happened to me a couple years ago. You will have to drop the box to get at bolts that need to be cut to get it apart to replace the latch.

Take the whole thing out as one piece. There is a cradle that holds the box up to the frame. You have to take the bolts out on each side (front & back as aligned to truck), I think there's 4 on the rear bumper side and 3 on the front side (behind the fender liner). Then there are 3 clips along the fender, top edge of the box holding it up. Awkward taking it out alone - easier with a helper to hold it while getting at the clips.

Once you have it out, you have to cut/grind the nuts off the striker (sticking through a plate on top of the box, to get it to drop out of the bracket) and open up the box. The key cylinder is separate from the latch assembly, so you do not have to replace the key. Then you can replace the striker and latch assembly and reassemble.

These are the parts needed:
