Question Whining noise from front of engine

So I'm having a new and exciting issue with my Titan. A couple of weeks ago, a whining noise started coming from the front driver's side of the engine. It's hard to pinpoint exactly where it's coming from, but it sounds like it's near the throttle body/fan/radiator area. The noise sounds similar to the sound when a car is low on power steering fluid (if that makes sense). I stopped by the dealer at lunch and he said I'd have to leave it. I guess I'll bring it in Saturday morning and hope they can fix it that day since it is my only vehicle.

Anyone else have this issue?

BTW - It's mostly noticeable at idle and low speeds and with the AC off or on.

My truck makes a whining noise when I drive steady at 35 mph. I've shifted gears, coasted in Nuetral and switched between 4wd and 2wd, tried different roads and the only thing that makes the moise go away is go faster or slower. None of my passengers have ever been able to help me pinpoint a source, some are even unsure if it is coming from the front (my guess) or rear.

The noise has been with the truck ever since we got it in Feb and now with 7k miles on it nothing has changed.

I've been lurking on this site waiting to see if this problem showed up.

Thanks for the response

My noise is DEFINATELY coming from the engine. I put it in park, get out and listen. I've opened up the hood and you can tell that's where it's coming from. The biggest problem I am having in pinpointing it is that since it's so hot right now, the fan is blowing all the heat up so I can't stick my head in and listen. Hopefully, the "service" department can fix it. I was just hoping it was something that I could fix myself so I won't be without a car.

Well, I don't know if I have the same thing. What I think I have is more like a high pitch whistle, which only occurs when I start the engine in the morning, I guess when the engine is cold.

I have yet to find out what the heck is the problem. I will take it in maybe next month, since I have been there 3 time this month for rattles, brakes and clear coat job.

Well, turns out it was the oil filter. Oil filter? That's what I said. The dealer said that it was not performing efficiently, making the pump whine. Don't ask me how, since they performed the last oil change!

Hey Decypher,
Did your truck sound just like Far North Titan's truck? If so i may have the same problem. Started about 4000 miles ago. Quiet until you reach about 35 mph, then it starts to whine. It continues to do so uless you let off the gas or go below 35. Doesn't matter what gear I'm in. I was concerned the rear end might be going, but like you it sounds more like it is coming from the front & not the back. Let me know if this was your same situation. Thanks

I know the sound. It is the auxillary radiator fan. I am having the same problem. The service department ordered a new fan over 6 weeks ago and it still has not come in. I spoke with my service manager and the fan is on back order. He said something to the effect, Nissan must know that these are a problem and that is the reason for the back order.

Bob,
It was a different issue. I believe pmkohler is addressing the issue you are having.

Thanks Decypher,
Due for an oil change in the near future. I'll have the dealer check it out

I have a whistle at 16-19 K RPM and is constantly there whenever i am in that range. cold hot, morning, night whenever. completely stock. other posts talk about this but so afr no real diagnosis, so i'm waiting till Nissan itself adresses it a TSB.

annoying but i can wait, because it sounds like a common thing and might get addressed at some time before my 36K warranty is up

Whining Sound 35-40mph

I have the same whining noise from 35-40mph and the dealer told me he couldn't hear it. Glad to know that this is common, but it sure doesn't sound right. I tow a 3500lb boat during the summer and about 2k in snowmobiles and wood in the winter so how about the rear end? Do you guys having the whining sound tow alot? I've got 27k on the truck and I'm having the mud flap tape in the front fixed tomorrow and going to ask the deal to find the prob. I'm all over this site trying to figure out this whine, but not that many guys talking about it. I'm at my limit with this problem.

I have the aux radiator fan problem. If I let it idle for about three minutes in the heat, it usually comes on. For me it sounds a bit like a helicopter. Haven't had a chance to schedule the repair with the dealership, but the service manager said he has actually seen that on quite a few Titans.

Whining Titan

I too had what I thought was a whine coming from the front end, and for a while thought it was just tire noise. It appeared at about 30-35 mph and got louder up to about 70 mph, as you might expect with tires going around faster. It would quit when I took my foot off the accelerator and coasted, so the idea of tire noise was scrapped. I felt it was coming from the engine/transmission until my wife opened the sliding rear window and it became obvious the rear end was the problem. I'd suggest those of you with an unknown whine that varies with speed have someone listen to the rear end, as my '04 differential/axle assembly has now been replaced by the '05 version and I was certain at first that the noise was in the engine compartment.

I have the same problem, but its at any speed. It only happens when cruising, it stops when off or on the gas. I highly doubt its a fan. It is definitely coming from the drivetrain somewhere. So, its either going to be transmission or rear end. Oh yeah, SE 4x2 no Big Tow.

So has anybody got a "for sure" on what this problem is? My truck has now developed this same exact problem. Is it the oil filter or the auxilary radiator fan?
