Rear Diff - leak

I just returned from the outer banks of NC and upon hosing down the underneath of my titan to remove sand. I noticed that the bottom bolt of the rear diff was wet, with oil not water, I let the entire truck dry for two days and still the bottom bolt is wet(does not drip or appear to be a lot of oil). I am not very familiar with the rear diffs, but it seems to me there may be a problem. The bolt is tight and I tried to turn to snug it up but it was very tight. Called the dealer and I am taking it in. I am assuming they will say nothing is wrong. Does the finned 05 cover fit the 04, if so I will just replace it myself. Thanks Mike.

Yes, the finned 05 cover will fit. You also need the brackets for the lines and the longer bolts.

As an alternative, you can buy a bigger capacity cover and the brackets here:

http://www.yourcovers.com/dc_10756.shtml

The downside is that the PML cover sticks out to far to allow use of a Hellwig anti-sway bar (if you are so inclined).

Yes, the '05 cover fits the '04 model. I did it myself before I started towing my boat this past summer. If you do a search you should be able to find some sites where you can pick one up cheap and everything that you'll need to replace it (i.e. brake bracket, Permatex RTV, and bolts).

I would at least try and save yourself some money. Some on here had said the dealer replaced with new fin and oil at no cost. It's worth a try.

I have the same thing happening as I write this. Took it to the dealer last week and they ordered the '05 + cover and are replacing the '04 under warranty (it goes in on Thursday to have the work done). I'd give your dealer a chance before spending $150 to do it yourself.

I took my titan in last night for service, and to check the rear diff leak. Here is the result of my complaint.
1. service tech told me that my 04 titan comes standard with synthetic oil in the diff's. (not true according to posts here)
2. Could not confirm rear diff leak, but bolts on diff were wet. (service stated that wet area was cleaned up, meaning they used a wire brush to remove it). Doesn't the wet bolts confirm there is a leak?? I have trouble talking/dealing with my service people, they just waste my time. They just dont want to do any work at all to the vehicle. I will find a new dealer for warranty service.

I guess I have to let it become a problem before any action can be taken. Frustrating.

it's my understanding that Nissan switched to synthetic in the rear during the '04 production run... so some have syn, some have conventional.

Anything Wet - as in Anything including bolts, axle housing itself, or the the diff cover would be signs of a "weep"... Weeping is not acceptable. I got the new oil for my weep (original was not synthetic - I'd flat out call your service tech a liar and have him reference the service manual for an '04 section MA-10). It doesn't say synthetic.

Or, print this out and tell him you want him to read it in front of the dealership owner.

http://www.nissanhelp.com/Ownership/.../NTB05-008.htm

Vegas... I've heard that "Switched during production on the '04's but if you read the SB, it states "All 2004 Titan"s.

What dealer is that ? I may need to try them. Mine wont budge and give me the new cover. I did buy the oil at employee price ( nice 12:35 a bottle ) but the fin I personally feel I should not have to pay for just like the oil but I budged on that one.
