under cab floor board clunk when going over speed bumps, etc.

I have had a darn clunk sound every since I got my truck new with 15 miles on it. It now has 6,800 and I need to take it in soon for the 7,500 mile service. I asked them at the 3,500 mile service to check it out and they said they check some of the cross member bolts and transmission mounts, but they did not find anything loose. I have searched on the forum and did not find any old threads related to this type of clunk. It is when I go over a speed bump...nothing fast(but not granny pace either) I get a very solid clunk that you can feel like something hitting the underside cab of the floor board and seems to do it mostly when the rear wheels start to hit the bump. It also does this over regular larger road bumps and seems to be getting worse. It really does not sound good when the windows are down...sounds like I am driving a POS and something is definitely wrong and sounds almost like a hammer wacking the frame underside. I have checked myself and all from my point of view is tight and nothing loose.

I have a 2006 CC 4x2 LE (no big tow).

Thanks for your suggestions so I can relay them to the service department...otherwise the truck has been great with no problems at all.

My 06 cc se 2wd does this too and I cant seem to find where its coming from. Mine does it the worst when pulling into a driveway up the gutter.

It seems that this noise you are talking about is the same noise i am calling a clicking niose. the tech at nissan did a search on there computor and they say that it is the wind up clips on the rear leaf spring allowing the springs to shift and make this noise. they ordered me a new set we will see if this solves it when they install them.

Re: under cab floor board clunk when going over speed bumps, etc.

The noise you are hearing is the front sway bar. It won't hurt anything but it is annoying. I had the D bushings replaced and the end links and it fixed the problem. If it comes back I will be upgrading to ENS bushings. I found the best way to replicate the problem for the dealer was to drop the pass tire off the road were it is alittle rough. You need to get the wheel bouncing while the truck is balanced neutral. We have rough roads in Ohio so it was pretty easy to duplicate the noise.

Thanks for the many suggestions....can you describe a little more about balancing the truck in nuetral and dropping the passenger wheel?

Re: under cab floor board clunk when going over speed bumps, etc.

A sway bar keeps the truck level when you are turning. The truck tries to lean one way and the sway bar counter acts by pushing down on one end while pushing up on the other. Hope that makes sense. What you want to try and do is keep the truck level so that there is no lean from side to side. This will keep the sway bar from having any weight on either side and allow it to move up and down which is were you are getting your noise. If you get under your truck and look at the "D" bushings, this is where the sway bars connects to the frame, I bet you can see where they are pushed out, or out of shape. What you want to try and do with the tire off the side of the road is to get the wheel bouncing up and down at a high rate of speed, not big up and down motions, just enough to get the wheel moving. If you get to much up and down the sway bar will have to much weight on it an stop the clunk. Hope all this makes sense.

Re: under cab floor board clunk when going over speed bumps, etc.

i've kinda been hearing a clunk noise every now and then myself from somewhere in the front end but i haven't pinpointed it yet, and i can't reproduce the noise either. it only happens occasionally. doesn't seem to be as profound as your noise though. i may crawl under there and see what i can find before i take it in for service to have my headlight replaced that has moisture in it...

Re: under cab floor board clunk when going over speed bumps, etc.

Here's a long shot but this is the problem I had. Its gonna sound dumb... but its a quick and easy check. For those with the bed compartment, I had placed the tie down cleats in the box and would hear this clunk noise going over speed bumbs and coming down drive ways. I checked everything and followed up with the dealer. One day I had taken out the cleats to clean them up a bit. That day driving the truck I had noticed that the noise was gone?!?! I then put the cleats back and the noise had returned. I now wrap these up in a shop towel so they don't bang around.

Re: under cab floor board clunk when going over speed bumps, etc.

For my truck I had the same clunk sound and it is the tail gate jumping on the torions mount right hand side of the bed. It is a open slut that lets the gate jump up just enought to drive me nuts. Going back to dealer next week for a cure!!!

Re: under cab floor board clunk when going over speed bumps, etc.

well....I started to drive the truck all last week and was able to reproduce the problem several times and seems to be getting worse. Definitely seems it is possibly something to do with the sway bar, bushings, or shocks as it did this several times when pulling into a somewhat steep incline/driveway off the main road at a slow normal speed the dreaded clunk came back...even my girlfriend was like WTF? Was that!!! I will take it in next week to see what they have to say after I give them the long list of good suggestions you all have provided for them to check out.

Re: under cab floor board clunk when going over speed bumps, etc.

I got my 7,500 mile service done yesterday and very happy to report the clunk is fixed. The end link bolts had worked themselves very loose according to the tech. I tested it out and can't get anymore clunk.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions.

Re: under cab floor board clunk when going over speed bumps, etc.

Well....the fix was very short lived at it started doing it again this morning which is only about 65 miles since picking up the truck Tuesday evening. It is not as bad as it was before but definitely hearing a pop/clunk again. So I guess it is something to do with the suspension bushing sway bar end links. Somebody suggested to me that the stock ones are not strong/big enough to handle the loads.
