Crack

As I was driving on Sunday I felt and heard a large "crack" which literally shook my truck. The truck then drove ok, didn't make any odd sounds or behave differently until I took my foot off the gas. Then an awful noise started which sounded like the drivetrain was rubbing on something internally. This only happened when I took my foot off the gas, nothing while I pushing down on the gas. Dropped it off at the dealership last night and just heard back from them this morning. Apparently the entire rear end failed, and I had SPECIFICALLY asked them about this in the past when the rear end had made some odd noises. Honestly, I like the titan but the quality of service I get is poor. Usually the are only reactive, never proactive. My truck has just over 32K miles on it, and this is the second rear end problem I have faced. The first was my diffcover rusted over, and they replaced it with the stainless cover. I am getting a little worried as I am nearing the end of warranty...

Sorry to hear it! But, do realize that your powertrain warranty is for 60,000 or 5 years!! Hopefully you won't have anymore issues.

Re: Crack

Most service departments are REACTIVE, which is a pain, but unless they hear or see the problem themselves they won't do anything!

I am a aircraft mechanic, and it can be very difficult to diagnose a problem that can't be duplicted. Even with an experience pilot discribing the problem. No company will change parts if they are not broken or are indicating and impending failure. I see many write ups in aircraft logbooks that after hours of troubleshooting shows no problem, and most of the time the problem never comes back.

Re: Crack

My whole point about the pro vs. reactive stuff was because I was noticing many of the warning signs that my rear end was going out. There were so many threads and after looking at some of the common signs I took it in (The first time). My beef was with the mechanics because they said, "Well we drove it, and it was fine". They never even removed the rear diff cover just to check it out.

Oh well, they are overnighting the parts and should be done in a few days, so in the mean time, I have to ride my ducati around...

Even worse are the intermittent problems. Software generated functions/displays are the worst. Being in the military and not having to pay for parts, most of which I change could buy four or five Titans, we usually replace the part with the highest likelyhood of causing the problem. Pilots/people don't really like to be told, "Well it checks good for us, you must be crazy/doing something wrong/or not know what you are doing."

I guess i got lucky cause i told my serv. dep. bout my brakes squeelin, and they test drove it and pulled them all apart and checked everyhthing but couldn't find anything wrong. They "documented" it in case anything else happened, but i'm glad they at least took the time to check them.

Yeah those can be a nightmare. We had a helicopter that would shock the pilot everytime he landed on an offshore rig. It wouldn't do it on the concrete pad. It took us forever to fiqure out which ground was bad.

Re: Crack

Wow, dropped off the truck on monday night, and it was ready this afternoon. Very impressed with the turn around, and not only did they fix the truck, but they gave it a nice wash too. Hopefully I won't be visiting the dealer any time soon...
