Lug Studs broke off while driving and wheel

I was just driving across country about 80mph and had my wheel fall off. All the lug studs sheared off pretty clean at the hub. I've already had it repaired bc I had to get back home to(AZ) but I dont know if I should be suing someone or who to blame this on. There was no vibration or wobbling/noise.........it just fell of and I rode on the rotor for about 1500 feet till I came to a stop. Has anyone had this happen to them?
Thanks,
-Carlo

Re: Lug Studs broke off while driving and wheel

yeah it was my fault though me and a buddy were rotating my tires and he told me he checked all the wheels.. well he didnt.. the back right wheel wasnt tightened at all..it broke half of them but i drove it to the dealer anyways...while i was waiting to get it fixed (hour job or so) i went ahead and let them keep it and i bought another

Re: Lug Studs broke off while driving and wheel

how old is your truck?
under warranty?
has that wheel ever been taken off? by whom?
did you buy it new?

i would not talk to the dealer until i knew my game plan!! if this becomes a legal matter they will use any info they can against you. (nissan)

Re: Lug Studs broke off while driving and wheel

I had the same thing happen to me with our Honda Odyssey in 2003, 2 weeks after I bought it.
I tried to elevate it up through corporate, and even got my insurance company involved. In the end, they blamed it on me, saying I overtorqued the bolts after I repaired a flat from a nail. It didn't matter that I used a recently-calibrated torque wrench.
The insurance company just paid it up, taking the stance it was cheaper to pay it than to take it to court.
Good luck, but if you, or anyone else, had ever taken that wheel off for any reason, chances are you'll get the blame.
