broken shackle on rear spring

I'm driving home from work today and I hear a loud noise from the rear of my truck. I thought maybe I hit something. I looked in my mirror and nothing. I get down the road a little and the noise is back but not as loud. I get home and look under the truck and find the shackle that holds the rear spring is broke. The noise was the spring hitting the bed which left a nice dent in the bottom of it.

I call my dealer only to find out it's probably not covered since my warranty has expired. I have an 05 with 38k miles on it. They say I should have it towed in so they can look at it. My problem is I'm 45 minutes from my closest dealer ship and I hate to pay that tow bill to find out it's not covered. I'm upset because I have never abused this truck. It's a 4x4 LE that's never been off roading. It's never even been pushed close the payload capacity.

Can anyone tell me what after market shackles might cost and if it's a big job replacing them?

Re: broken shackle on rear spring

Yup. Common problem. One of mine broke and I had it replaced at a local spring shop for $50. They used one that is supposed to be for a 1979 F-150.

The weld is bad where it is seamed together and it comes apart.

I didn't go the PRG Total Chaos route for 2 reasons. 1.) Way too expensive ($150) and 2.) They lower the back when putting them on.

Here is what mine looked like when it broke:

Re: broken shackle on rear spring

I don't think that the Total Chaos shackles are available any longer, not positive on that, but I do remember a blurb about that somewhere. I have them and the comparison between them and the stockers is night and day!!! Yes, they lower the rear 3/4" but to be honest, you can't even tell a difference.

Greg's site, www.prgproducts.com , simply says PRG Shackles--Coming Soon!, which it probably has for awhile now. I haven't seen him post anything that said that they are available yet though????? Best bet is to give him a call if you want a set of beefier replacements.

You're not the first to have this happen though. And it SHOULD be covered on the 60k warranty!!!

The stock shackles can be welded to make them stronger, so I'd suggest if it's not covered under warranty, buy a replacement, weld it, then take the other side off and weld it up too!!

Here is a picture of the TC shackles:

Re: broken shackle on rear spring

I'm waiting to hear from the service manager right now. He is checking to see what he can do. He's telling me it's not a problem they are seeing but I think he knows it's an ongoing problem. I'll go with the replacements before I pay to have the OEM shackle put back on.

Thanks for the help.

Re: broken shackle on rear spring

I was thinking the same thing when I saw your post about your tailgate. Juday is not a real common name. I also live in Indiana so yeah it's a real small world.

Anyways, I called Greg and ordered a set of his new shackles. He thinks they are better than the TC ones. They have three different mounting height options. They are priced better and come powder coated. I just have to wait a week to get them and I hate not being able to drive my Titan!

I am currently waiting on replacement parts for my broken shackle I have just under 50K and they did not give me a hard time at all about the repair.

Re: broken shackle on rear spring

Others seem to have been able to get theirs replaced without issue to. I don't really understand why I have got such a hard time on this. I called the service manager this morning and I am still waiting for him to call me back. My dealer has been great about fixing things. I have had all my services done there and really expected them to step up and fix this since it seemed like a strange thing to break so soon. He kept telling me he hadn't seen this before so maybe they think I have abused it or something. I think it's easy to tell by looking at my truck I take good care of it. I'm just ready to get it fixed.

Re: broken shackle on rear spring

I don't know if this helps but they said it was only like $60 worth of parts.

Re: broken shackle on rear spring

$129 shipped. He thought he would have them on Monday or Tuesday ready for shipping. They were being powder coated. I plan to call him back on Monday to make sure. He also said he had one set of the TC shackles left but that was on Thursday so those may be gone.

My dealer finally called and said he would replace mine under warranty which I'm going to have done but I'm still going to switch to the PRG ones.

Re: broken shackle on rear spring

Juday-

I live in Noblesville as well. Not sure I've seen your titan running around, there are a few more lately since Butler Nissan came to town. I have a silver CC LE. I live just north of Riverview hospital, what part of town do you live??
