My best friend from HighSchool is an engineer there. He was on the launch in 2003-2005. He still knows guys in the Titan/Armada Platform Engineering Group.
I also found out that another change to the diff. part numbers that I referenced above is that the 05' has a 600N pull out requirement, not the 1000N requirement that are on the newer diffs.
Nissian and Dana are still looking for 2006 or newer Titans that have had the pull out issue. There are some reports of the axle pull out even after the change, but they said it dropped dramatically after the change.
As for someone buying the old version to "modify / repair". It's a lost cause in my opinion. I found a new diff on ebay for $500 (new part number). This is an 05 diff from an Armada. Armada's always got the fixes prior to Titans for some reason.
I have an '04 and I have just starting having the same problem. I have 194,000 km (120,000 miles) and my axle has popped out twice. I brought it to a garage I trust first (before reading this thread) and they found the clip problem and put the axle back which engaged the clip. Since then it popped again and I pushed the axle back in myself.
I'm not too impressed but other than that the truck is working perfect and I've had no other problems. Obviously it's long past warranty but does anyone know how much it costs to change out the older diff to swap for the newer one, and if it even would help?
Thanks
gh

(I admit I didn't read all 81 posts, so forgive me if this has already been addressed.) But if this is going to be a sticky, at least fix the spelling in the title. Unless you mean an axle that tries and tries again without success, it should read "Front Axle Failure".
Also, there is no reason to title it as a thread, because it is obviously a thread.
For those of us with a 4X4 that have had a front axle failure. I believe there should be a Sticky. I know we already have one for rear axle failures, but not for front axle failures. I have seen several people with this problem including myself
I will start with mine and hopefully everyone with a front axle failure will add to the thread. I have reported the failure to NHTSA and I believe everyone with this problem should do the same.
Well, it finally happened. I had to replace the front differential. At the magic 60,900 mile mark of course. Lucky for me I purchased an extended warranty, when the truck was new and surprise the company is still in business, except the extension cost me about a 1K and the deductible is 100 bucks. The front diff just started making a whine/ growling noise. The Nissan service adviser also stated he is very dissapointed in the Titan line. He said he was thinking about stocking the rear and front diffs because he said they have replaced about 30 front diffs alone already and expects many more to fail... NICE. Anyway this POS 2004 Titan 4X4 SE crew cab with off road package now has a new rear diff, with matching new front diff along with the fix for the brake judder. All with only 61K on it. I would dump this truck except noboby would buy it. I have always taken really good care of this truck. It is completely stock, never rodded it or taken it off road except for the occasional yearly hunting trip. I dont even tow heavy. I am really dissapointed with the quality. I have been a Nissan faithful since I used to be a Datsun Technician back in the late 70's early 80's. Nissan you blew it with the Titan. Sorry.

Pretty much sums up my feelings on this truck. Although some of the koolaid drinkers here will flame you for being honest. I have never had a new vehicle back at the dealership as much as my Titan.
I am hoping the replacement parts last as long or longer than the originals. Once it is paid off, good bye Nissan. It is a shame because the content and power were without equal up until every other manufacturer countered with more displacement and cranked up their numbers in their 2008 and up models. Power and content is what put me in a Titan. Reliability is what is pushing me away.

Well so far the replacement rear end and brake fix have worked okay. Rear end has had no more issues(yet) however the front brakes still warp rotors rather easily. Hopefully the new front diff had the right design revisions to remedy the previous flaws.
I figured I might get a little bit of bad feedback for being honest and sharing my dissapointment about my truck but oh well. On a positive note, I would like to point out I have been extreemly satisfied with the Nissan service department. They have bent over backwards to perform all the needed repairs quickly and without dispute and zero charge, except for now since I have a slight deductible I would give them an A++. I currently also own a Toyota Avalon(188K miles) and it has been very reliable but on the rare occasion it needed special service the Toyota service department was horrible. Wish I had some Toyota reliability and serviced by my Nissan dealer:).
Ok guys, i read MOST of the posts in this thread. I have an 04 front diff in my Xterra. The frigging driver side axle popped out just like most of yours. We replaced the seal and pounded it back in. Would new c clips fix this issue? Or is this a bum diff and I should replace it with a newer model diff?
