Ticking sound.. Sounds like and exhasut leak

Hi i recently traded in my xterra for an 04 Titan love the truck, but when i first start it up and start driving it there is a small ticking sound you can hear in the cab. You can only hear it when i accelerate and withing a couple of miles you cant hear it anymore or maybe i just cant has anybody experienced this problem before. The truck has 45000 miles. My first thought at first was it was an exhaust leak but since it seems to stop and a muffler shop said there are no leaks i don't know. My second question is when i took the truck to Firestone for them to check to make sure there was no major problems they said it would fail and emission test because of the exhaust. The muffler shop thou said Nissan intentionally placed a hole in the exhaust to let condensation drip out is this correct?

OEM Exhaust Manifold Gaskets are POS on these and are known to go out. Intentional hole in the Muffler that causes a failed emissions test???? Gimme a break!!! Try another shop, sounds like they're pulling your leg to sell you a new exhaust.

Re: Ticking sound.. Sounds like and exhasut leak

not sure about the hole for condensation drip, but i have a ticking sound from idle to 2000 rpm and up. I have stock exhaust and dealer said it was a normal sound that the exhaust makes. i thought at first that it was a valve or lifter.

Re: Ticking sound.. Sounds like and exhasut leak

Well if it is a cracked exhaust manifold it is still covered under warranty like an 8 year 80000 mile emission warranty since it is a 2 wheel drive right?

There is some ticking that is normal but ticking from a blown gasket or cracked manifold can sometimes be heard over the radio playing too. Oops, I forgot about the cracked manifolds.

A cracked exhaust maniflod will make a ticking noise till it gets hot and expands and somewhat seals the crack. Take it in and tell them what you think it is. The manifolds are welded to the cats and that makes them covered for 80k.

The warranty is on the truck, number of owners is not relevant.

Re: Ticking sound.. Sounds like and exhasut leak

I just took mine in tonight for what sounds like the same thing. It started out with a tick that sounds exactly like yours. After two months its grown into a decent tick and blowing sound. So naturally i thought the same thing as many. Exhaust manifold or gasket. Took it in tonight and dealer did confirm that nissan has had some issues with both. About 1 out of 50. They checked it out and just called and said it was the fuel injection system. They said there is a cover and insulation on the rail that is faulty and they are going to replace it. He did tell me though that I just made the cut. He said, contrary to someone elses comment in this thread, that it is considered emissions related and emissions are only covered for 3 years 50k. I took it in at just under 49k. I dont have the book to confirm the emmisions warranty and didnt care since its covered so. I have an extended warranty and he said that it will not cover emissions. They ordered the part and it will come in next week. I will report back with specifics if the work order provides more info or different info and if the sound goes away after the repair.

The emissions warranty is 80,000 or eight years:

I went directly to the service manager (by-passing the service writer, who knows nothing) with the printout. He researched it and confirmed that it is covered by warranty. He will order both exhaust manifolds and call me to schedule a fix time after they get them in. ( I have no idea how long that will take) My truck has 66,000 miles.

There is much confusion amongst dealers as to whether these are Powertrain or Federal coverage.
On some models{not the 5.6 V8},if the cat can be removed from the manifold, the coverage is powertrain only. The Titan has an integrated converter that can not be removed making complete replacement necessary.
Most of the manifold/cats are cracking where the rear #7 or #8 cylinders enter the collector.Picture a set of headers, there is a flange where the exhaust tubes mount to the cyl heads. For some unknown reason this flange has a 1/4 inch cut seperating the rear cylinders on each side.So in essence the front 3 cylinders are mounted to the heads and supported from torque, twisting, and heat expansion by this flange. The rear cylinder on each side are on their own and only being supported from where they bolt to the head..In addition, the rear tube is closest to the heat of the integrated cat and probably carrying most of the weight of this also.
This is usually where they are all cracking.
Because of the integrated Cat Converter, the warranty coverage is covered by the Federal Emissions Warranty 8 yr-80,000 miles
