Diff Lock, Slip and ABS lights

This morning, after having driven about 220 miles, the DIFF LOCK light started flickering (not a steady flash) and then came on solid. After a couple miles, it went off and both the SLIP and ABS lights came on. After driving another couple of miles and parking, I stopped and restarted the truck and the DIFF LOCK light flickered a bit and went off. The SLIP and ABS lights did not come on.

I'll call the service manager at the dealer this morning to see what's up but before I do, any ideas?

How do any of these lights know that the diff is going bad? The answer is they don't. The slip and abs lights use the abs sensor located on the wheel hub, and the dif light is just a solenoid.

I spoke to the service manager and I'm going in on Monday. He said they probably (emphasize probably) don't indicate anything going wrong that would prevent me from driving the 220 miles back to NYC tomorrow. I hope he's right.

Those lights are indicating something is wrong with the abs system. They all tie into the abs. It has nothing to do with the interal gearing of the rear end.

Re: Diff Lock, Slip and ABS lights

How cold out was it weather-wise and how warmed up was your truck when this happened?

I ask because about a month and a half ago in some serious cold I had an issue with my 4x4 system after engaging it in some minus 32f weather while the truck was still cold. Also, the truck had been sitting for a couple of days in a garage where I believe the fluids didn't do their proper job when I engaged it right away.

So after a few miles the truck warmed up and I stopped and started it again - warning lights went out and it engaged into 4x4 no problem. I've run it in 4HI about a dozen times since with no issue.

My guess - like any computerized system there's always a ghost in the system. It won't hurt to get it checked out but if it only did it once you are probably fine.

Re: Diff Lock, Slip and ABS lights

My ABS light and slip light came on the other day just like yours did. I checked the level of break fluid and it was a bit low. I topped it up and the lights never came back on.

Re: Diff Lock, Slip and ABS lights

It was about 33 outside and the truck was very warmed-up having been driven 220 miles on interstate highways. It's been sitting in an indoor garage since yesterday morning and I'll drive home this evening and I'll see if it happens again. Thanks for the advice about the brake fluid...I'll check that out.

Re: Diff Lock, Slip and ABS lights

The news isn't good. I've had a couple conversations with the service manager in the past week and at first they thought it was the differential control module and they ordered the part. Yesterday he told me they found problems with the differential and need to replace it. It's on order and it will be next week before I can get the truck. They did supply me with a rental car at no cost.

More to come as I learn more.

Re: Diff Lock, Slip and ABS lights

I picked the Titan up today...12 days after taking it in. The reason it took so long was they had trouble getting the new differential shipped in. Over $3000 in parts alone when it was all said and done...fortunately it was all covered under the warranty. The dealer even picked up the cost of the rental car I used for the 12 days. Next week will be my first long trip and I'll be a nervous wreck the whole time hoping the damn idiot lights don't come on! But I'm glad to have the truck back...I missed driving it.

Re: Diff Lock, Slip and ABS lights

Update... Drove 220 miles to Boston this morning and no warning lights. It seems all is good. (knock wood)
