Noise from rear?

Hey guys - I'm getting a strange noise, sounds like its coming from under the rear. Happens randomly, and I only notice it at low speeds ( 5-10mph). I've noticed it when applying light break pressure and turning, but also when idling forward with no pressure on breaks. Best I can describe it as a "whomp" - sounds kind of like a barking seal, believe it or not. Again this happens randomly, could be a couple times in a row (which makes me think of something rotating - whomp...whomp) sometimes doesn't happen at all.

I haven't had a chance to really get down and look around much yet - I'm taking her in for an oil change on monday so I figured I'd let them check it out then, but in the mean time anyone have any ideas or thoughts on this? I'm at 18k miles.

Sounds like the differential, get it into the dealer while you still have warranty left.

Re: Noise from rear?

i think i may have a similar thing. Mostly while slow, the truck makes that seal "bark" type noise. Thats the only way i can describe it but it sounds like that animal. Also happens randomly and at different temperatures. When cold (ex leaving a parking lot in the morning) to right after getting off the freeway. Took it in one time, the tech heard it and say it could be "glazing" on the brakes. Took it in another time, couldnt reproduce the noise, but since i left it for the day, the next morning they heard it, but said it was normal "disc brake" noise.

The noise doesnt seem to be affecting anything. I sorta agreed that it was brake noise as it started making this noise on my original diff, and it made the same noise 2 days after i got a completly new one put in for leaking axle seals.

The noise mine makes seems to go with the rotations. The slower i go, the slower the speed of the noise, the faster i go, the faster the noise goes to a point where it dissapears.

My noise is pretty loud too, sort of embarrassing driving though the parking lot with the noise coming from the truck. I tried to record it before, but the engine noise overpowers the audio.

Yeah that sounds like mine too. Definitely different than the occasional break squeak. Notice it mostly when pulling out cold in the morning. But also a few times when I've been running for an hour or so. I'm taking it in Tuesday so I guess I'll have an update then.

Re: Noise from rear?

I have had problems with my Goodyear tires. As they get older, they start this whoop-whoop-whoop-whoop as you drive slow on any road. As you slow the noise slows. The only way I found to improve it is to have the tires reballanced and rotated. Discount tire told me it was from not rotating offen enough. When the new goodyears go on, the noise stops.

Re: Noise from rear?

Thought I'd give an update, since I got it back from the dealership today:

Of course like old man w/o Viagra, my Titan wouldn't perform once at the dealer. Drove around the lot with the service guy for a good 10 minutes - absolutely no squeaks or squeals. I mentioned brakes and diff, they said they checked everything out and nothing looked wrong, but to bring it by when it was making the noise. Since the dealer is a good 30-45 min. out of my way, I doubt when I'll be able to time it out right for that to happen, but it doesn't seem to be affecting anything and it doesn't happen all the time so I will just hope it goes away for now.
