Question Codes P1148 and P1276 on my 2005 Nissan Titan

Hi,

I'm OBDII getting the following codes on my 2005 Nissan Titan:

P1148 Closed Loop, Bank 1
P1276 Air/Fuel Ratio Sensor 1

Can anyone tell me what I should check - and where the possibly bad components are located? I did a bit of research and it looks like I can access the O2 sensors and air/fuel from underneath the truck. Can I do this without doing anything major - like having to remove the cat?

Also, any chance that the problems might be covered by "Emission Long Term Defect" portion of the warranty? I'm already past the 36 month/36,000 mile general warranty.

Thanks,

Kevin

K&N air filter installed a few thousand miles ago - could THAT be the problem?

After reading some other threads regarding K&N air filters, I'm now thinking that THAT could be the cause of my problems. Should I ditch the K&N and replace it with a conventional air filter? Is it possible that I can clean the sensors and all will be OK?

Thanks,

Kevin

The O2 sensors are only covered under the 3/36 warranty. But I've always had no problems having them replaced within the 5/60 powertrain warranty. Find out from your local dealer....I think most don't realize the powertrain warranty doesn't cover the sensors.
The O2 sensors (there are 4 I believe) can be reached underhood or from under the truck. The air/fuel is the MAF sensor. That's in the air intake tube and can usually be cleaned. Pick up a can of MAF sensor cleaner from your local auto parts store. Over-oiled filters will do this.

Re: Codes P1148 and P1276 on my 2005 Nissan Titan

I think it has something to do with the federal emissions warranty.

Quote:
Federal Emissions Warranty
The Federal Emissions Warranty guidelines are based on federal regulations and apply to vehicles in all 50 states. Vehicles are covered by two types of emissions control system warranty, "Emission Defect Warranty" and "Emissions Performance Warranty".

Depending on the state you live in, the Performance Warranty is for 3 years/50,000 miles. The Defect Warranty is generally consistent with the manufacturer's bumper-to-bumper warranty with certain parts (catalytic converter and electronic emissions controls (PCM) for up to 8 years/80,000 miles. Please refer to your owner's manual for your exact emissions warranty.

You have to read the warranty. It's very specific as to what is and isn't covered. But as I mentioned, I've had MANY O2 sensors on different Nissans covered under warranty past the 3/36 warranty.

Did some research this is what I found

http://www.epa.gov/oms/consumer/warr95fs.txt

Quote:
Design and Defect Warranty Coverage for 1995 and newer light-duty
vehicles:

* Emission control and emission related parts are covered for the
first 2 years or 24,000 miles of vehicle use; and

* Specified major emission control components are covered for the
first 8 years or 80,000 miles of vehicle use.

Major Emission Control Components?

There are three specified major emission control components,
covered for the first 8 years or 80,000 miles of vehicle use on 1995
and newer vehicles:

* Catalytic converters.

* The electronic emissions control unit or computer (ECU).

* The onboard emissions diagnostic device or computer (OBD)

That's in your warranty booklet. Again, the O2 sensors are covered only for the 3/36 but see if your dealer will cover it anyhow. Like I said earlier, mine did on more than one occasion.

Re: Codes P1148 and P1276 on my 2005 Nissan Titan

I had mine replaced at the dealer a couple months ago, Its the first time I had to pay to have something fixed on the Titan, dealer said it wasn't covered and it cost me like 450 bucks.
