Has anybody been able to negotiate their purchase solely by e-mail? I did it a few years ago when I bought by VW Passat. Used the blanket approach, and only dealt with those that answered with more then "come on down and talk to us".
I was waiting for the discounted pricing from Costco to show up on their website...
But I kept getting the "Pricing not yet available for this model"
So I requested Costco pricing for a Dodge Ram - and when the internet sales mgr contacted me - I requested the ($500 over invoice) for a Titan instead.
Initially the internet rep was vague and non-committal - but may have sensed my direct approach when I declared that I was willing to travel the entire state to get the deal if necessary.
The next day the offer was confirmed!
Went to the dealer - was in and out in 35 minutes - and now patiently waiting 7 weeks for delivery...

Has anybody been able to negotiate their purchase solely by e-mail? I did it a few years ago when I bought by VW Passat. Used the blanket approach, and only dealt with those that answered with more then "come on down and talk to us".
Yes, I did. I approached 3 dealerships via email. Two agreed to $100 over invoice and the third offered it at straight invoice...guess where I ordered it?
I negotiated $200 over invoice via email / phone. I emailed 5 dealerships. It took about 6 business days. I pick it up next week!
The first time I test drove in December, the saleman told me the Titan would be selling for over MSRP. At that time the invoice pricing was not availabe from my Credit Union, so I decided to wait.
Well I am now an official Titan owner. Picked it up today. SE 4x2 Red Brawn, se popular, utility bed package, floor mats and splashguards. Sixty dollars over invoice. I had a couple of other dealers get real close but not having to travel made this the better deal. I am satisfied and so are they. I negotiated via email and phone. I didn't play around got my info from fighting chance.com and let them know I knew what they paid. Can't recommend fighting chance enough. Did me good. I will post a picture when I get some taken.
Hi! I am new to the forum and really enjoy the enthusiasm of all the new owners. I saw the Titan and had to have it but have been so turned off by salesmen in the past I dreaded the ordeal of the purchase. I decided to avoid it. I did all the Titan sites I could find and decided I wanted the LE King cab 4 x 2 with the big tow package, the side air bag package, the floor mats and the splash guards. (Everything elsiI could want was included) Three web sites and one dealer quoted a MSRP OF $32,375.00 including the destination charge. I contacted the fleet manager of Lupient Enterprises in Minneapolis Mn. and told him what I wanted, asked him to confirm the published invoice price fo all the avove was $28,315.00 (Which he did) and told him I would commit to buy today if he could sell it for $29,000.00 or less including the destination charge. He put me on hold for less than a minute and said he could sell it for $28,965.00 and if I had anything to trade he would make a seperate cash offer for whatever it was.(I have a 1994 hardbody with 175,000 miles which I intend to keep. (I prviously owned a 1986 hardbody which I drove for 180,000 miles.) If I had wanted to haggle I might have gotten it for less but probably not much. He made $650.00 plus any hidden incentives and i got what I wanted, a fair price with a five minute telephone conversation that was extremely pleasant. I dropped by his office the next day and made a $500 deposit. He already had all the paperwork prepared and placed the order on the spot. I will get my Titan the last week in April. I can hardly wait but I know it will be worth it and I have already had the best buying experience in my lifetime.

The good stuff is that yes, it does pay to do your research on vehicle invoice prices etc. This gives you a baseline figure for negotiating. Remember, it IS up to the dealer whether or not to sell you a car.
As for the other side presented by our sales associate that posted. Yes, business have to make money make no mistake. However, you know as well as I do that there are quite a few dealerships out there that have a statement such as "If we are not making XXXX number of dollars off a cash deal then no sale...IF they have a trade-In then the number XXXX applies".
The bottom line is buying a car is a negotiation. If a dealer wants to be stubborn and not give you XXXX for your trade or not come down on the price, you as the consumer have the ability to go elsewhere.
Dealers on the other hand live and die by reputation. IF they want a good one, they evaluate the deal not only in terms of numbers but in terms of 'how many other people can this person bring me' or 'What is our sales target for this month overall and for this specific model" and "What incentives is coperate offering me to move XX number of XX vehicle" etc.
Bottom line, there are two sides to the game. To win the game, both sides will compromise to a 'solution'. IF a compromise can't or won't be made...end game...move on to another dealer or customer.
Also....don't even bring up 'RESALE VALUE' because that is a myth. Value is determined by what someone is willing to pay for something. Someone who trades in cars in three years or less always ends up on the bottom side of a 'Resale Value' so this isn't even a good point unless you plan to sell it yourself and you might get wholesale book in most cases. I will give you a perfect example: 99.5 Nissan Pathfinder w/89k - Full Service records and not a scratch with brand new rubber etc. KBB and all the others list the 'Wholesale Value' as $13,800 in my region. I literally had to pull teeth to get $11,500 for the vehicle
using it as a trade-in..(Best price between 4 different dealers)..Why? Dealer greed and thier so called 'Black Book'. Argue all you like, but facts are facts.
The whole buying process is a numbers game....make the numbers appealing to both sides and a car is sold.
Been trying to give someone at Nissan twenty something thousand odd dollars for a week now and having no luck.
The big dealership here in Miami is Maroone and they pretty much want MSRP.
CarsDirect.Com couldn't get a better price anywhere in So. Florida.
Gonna try the two independents this week but I am not enthusiastic.
Arghhh
Mike
Hey Mike, I'd tell Moron to keep their Titans. If you want to take a trip to Orlando, Classic Nissan quoted me 1% over invoice through the Internet Department. I saved and printed out the email from the internet manager and took it to my local dealer, in a short twenty minutes, they accepted it, especially when I told them that I was ready to travel 150+ miles to save $3,000, and use part of it to visit Disney/Epcot.
After receiving no reply from Classic Nissan in Orlando and no seeming interest at any of the dealers we visited to buy a Titan, my wife and I just surrendered and ordered one today that we negotiated by e-mail. Got it for $1200 less than MSRP. Not even close to any of the deals reported in this thread but we just ran out of patience with the whole process.
I had the same problem here trying to get the local dealer to get me something not on the lot. I finally went about 50 miles away after I located my own truck.
As far as price goes.. in many parts of the country these truck are hard to come by in particular setup (try finding a large choice of 4X2's in the Mid-Atlantic). I consider 5 percent above dead cost a fair profit. It's not like there is a $2,000 rebate and dozens on all the lots.
Somewhere between MRSP and Invoice sounds right it's just a matter of each individual situation being different. Like I said each deal is different and you can't judge your truck and trade and deposit based on what others here say.

That makes no sense at all. Titans are not exactly flying off the lot. They are doing well, but that response suprises me. I do not participate on this Forum to try to peddle my trucks as I think it is distasteful. BUT, maybe I will have too ship a few Titans if you all MUST have them
Ive been looking at one for awhile now and today i went ahead and asked for a price over the net. They are selling for 500 over invoice the guy says and im like i know we can get a better price than that , shoot it would be my 3rd nissan in 9 months . Theyve got an XE 4x4 for 21,700, im going to work on them with that one and then say i want and SE and see what i can get with that.....
