Exclamation The REAL drivetrain clunk...Not axle wrap....

Ok, this is f-ing funny. Took the truck in thusday for a "drivetrain clunk". The dealership said it was caused by my "blocks". So after talking to Greg I went under neath and to my surprise no bolts holding the tranny to the cross-member.

So that means this f-ing dealership didn't even take one minute to look at my truck. Make sure you all double check these bolts.

I'm gonna kick the dealerships *** on monday for my time & money in gas.

Damn....
I just found two sheared bolts similar to those you pictured, laying on my garage floor.
I'll crawl underneath later to check it!

Thanks for the pics. I'd already checked those a few days ago after talking with Greg. Mine are tight and in good condition... my clunk is actually axle wrap.

Hey guys,

I just checked my transmission support bolts. Both were unscrewed about an inch. The driver's side bolt went back in by hand............BUT, the right one has stripped or ruined the threads; it wouldn't budge when I tried to tighten it up. Sounds like a call to the Nissan dealer tomorrow.

Yea, so talked to the dealership. They were no help. I reemed them out saying that how does a "backyard mechanic" look under the truck for less than 5 minutes looking for a drivetrain clunk find two bolts screwed all the way out. What, a service tech can't find it?

Basically because I had why they called "spacers" and "oversized tires" that was the cause of the clunk. Ok turbo, that was obviouly no the answer.

So I'll be taking this to another dealer now since the one I bought it at is 80 miles away. But the crappy thing is the service director said "sorry man, nothing I can do"

you

Both of mine were unscrewed also. It is a PIA to get up there to screw them in also. My dealer really sucks. I had an oil change last week on saturday. I parked my truck in a different spot after work on the following friday. I noticed several oil spots where I usually park. Guess what, my oil drain plug was only finger tight and was leaking a small amount. I was still within the limits on the dip stick, just on the lower end of it. I needed to add a quart and tighten the plug and was good to go. I called the dealer and told them about it and they were "oh well".

XXX_Titan Which dealership was it?

Which dealership was it?

I'd like to know where Titan owners can expect that 'quality' of service.

I bought a cheap Harbor Freight metric tap and die set today. The thread size for the bolts that go into the transmission are 12mm x 1.75. I cleaned up the bolt threads with the die and installed the bolt into the transmission with no problem. Thus, no wasted trip to the Nissan dealer.

Tap and die set = $10.75
Gas to go to the Nissan dealer and back = $15.00

$4.25 saved and the job done correctly.

I had the same issue in April - dealer "couldn't duplicate" my complaint after they had it all day and I found it in less than 15 minutes. See a copy of my post below.

I have read several threads on the forum that talk about noises in the driveline (clunking, tinking, etc). I experienced the same thing on my 2005 Titan (4,700 miles) this week. Took it to the dealer yesterday, described the problem in detail (including that I believed it was in the driveline), and received the typical "we don't hear a thing" response at the end of the day. So I brought it home last night and did some simple backyard troubleshooting with my father-in-law. We found the noise to be real apparent with the engine off, trans in park, and rolling the truck back and forth, specifically by rolling the RF tire. My father-in-law rolled it back and forth while I crawled around underneath. Much to my surprise, I found the two transfer case mount bolts (at crossmember) had either backed themselves out or had never been fully tightened from the factory. The weight of the transfer case was basically resting on the bolts, which was causing the noise. Luckily the crossmember is there so they couldn't come all the way out! Anyway, returned to the dealer this morning, showed the service advisor the noise, and then proceeded to tell him what the problem was. He seemed stunned that we were able to determine the problem in less than 15 minutes when they had the truck all day yesterday! I have to wonder what kind of training these guys have when they can't troubleshoot simple problems. Just wanted to share my experience...

Oh wait.... Finally got mad at the dealer and when to see where my fan and diff cover was. To their credit they wanted to check the diff fluid and see if everything was OK. it check out fine. While the the truck was on the lift I asked the service manager " Should there be fluid on the skid plate under the transfer case?"

Turns out it is was leaking badly. I am glad i was there to do my own inspection.

Thanks for the info. My truck is in the dealer now getting BRAKE FIX KIT installed. I called them up and told them to check trans x-member bolts. I let you know if they find anything.
