hey lou, how did you bend your frame, or did i miss a thread where you explained?
also, if it were me, i would run the bumper around the rear fenders, if it were me....
and i say go for the frp's....
...Some A-hole ran into the back of me on the freeway, hit hard enough to bend the frame down right where the hitch attaches to it...Bent down almost 2 inches on the left side...
Hitch & bumper history...Time for something new...
Here's my start...First I ditch the spare tire in the factory location, and then I fab some trick one-off brackets to bolt onto the frame, and get them bolted in....

I cut some hi-dollar CRW 1020 mild steel 1.750" OD by 11 ga. tubing and ....I have a master piece...

CHP gonna get you brah... wheres your license plate lite.
There stiff on that one up here, gives them a reason to poke around I guess
Gave me an idea though looks good.
I built a POS temp bumper first to keep John Law out of my wallet while I drive and work on the keeper...
Ok...I started by making a hole template for the frame holes using some light cardboard, a plate clamped horizontal to locate the hole vertically and a ball peen hammer to lightly tap around each hole...
I then take my hole template and use it as a guide locating the holes on my bumper bracket pattern...I like to use a gasket punch set to make accurate and nice round holes when making cardboard patterns...
I double check my fit on the frame...And if I'm happy at this point, i would take 2 blank pieces of metal, this time it will be 4" wide by .375" thick Cold rolled bar tack weld them together and using the mill & holesaw cope the tubing end(just like the temp brackets were done) and then drill the mounting holes thru both plates at once...
Then to the bandsaw to cut them (still tacked together) to shape followed up by some time on the Burr-King belt sander to give them a crisp machined finsih...
Sounds good....BUT.......I didn't get beyond the pattern making, thinking of going to 5" wide instead of 4"....This would add a little more strength, and grab more side frame area...
I'll be stopping by Industrial Metals Monday to see if I can find what I want...Then it's more fab & Foto time...
I thought some would like to see how some of this stuff is fabbed, so that's why I'm doing the play-by-play...If there are a lot of you guys who are interested...

figured it was temp, what you inspired me though is I was looking for a clean way to mount and notch some plate, never occured to use the holesaw and clamp it to my drill press table much better than grinding and I don't have access to a manual mill anymore.

With the mill, you can cope as much or little as you really need, but remember when using a drill press that you need to have enough material on your blank for the holesaws center drill to go thru...This supports the side loads that a mill is designed, but not a drill press to take...
I'll be taking this project as an opportunity to share many years of fabbing tricks...

wish I still had my job i'd be ok I worked in a machine shop fuq...
Bandsaw, mill, TIG welder... gotta work around that now.
I've got a tabletop harbor freight drill press, stick welder, crackerbox wirefeed, basic handtools, grinder and a pipe kinker... this should be interesting lol

...Yeah with out trying to sound like I'm toot'n my own whistle, it's pretty nice...
Makes doing projects much more enjoyable...
I won't be able to bend any tube for at least a week...Our tube bender is being rented out to a special effects production company for a little while longer...
I have access to another bender, but the dies have too large a radius.
