View Poll Results: What brand of motor oil do you use in you Titan?
I have always used and liked Castrol Syntec in my other vehicles but it looks like mobil 1 is the choice of most Titan owners. Tell us why!!!!
Well I'm the opposite as you. I've always hated syntec and used mobil 1, well that was until recently. First off all syntec is not the same. the 5w-50, 5w-30, 10w-30, 10w-40 syntec oils are group III base oils. Which makes them not really a synthetic at all if you wanted to get technical. Although they are an ok oil. To put it straight you are simply getting ripped off if you are paying the $4 per qt. asking price for it, $2.50 per qt. would be fair. The above syntec oils are all also made in the USA. Now comes along syntec 0w-30, first thing different is its made in Germany, next thing its a real PAO synth like mobil 1, next thing is its an acea A3 rated oil and its a 30wt, which is almost unheard of, the A3 rating is usually given to 40wt and thicker oil. Best part is it cost the exact same as the other crap they call syntec, you just have to find it.
The reason I chose this oil over everything else out there is i'm a sucker for a thicker oil, now I know your thinking what is thick about a 0w-30 oil, well its true its a 30wt. but its at the top of the 30wt scale, and at temp maintains that thickness which is how it got its A3 rating(only mobil 1 oils with this rating are 0w-40 and 15w-50). As fine as mobil 1's 30wt oils are, for me I find them to be too thin. Where the GC syntec is at the top of the 30wt scale, the mobil 1 30wts are all at the bottom of the 30wt scale. Thats also why I feel people complain about valvetrain noise when using these mobil 1 oils, something I noticed completely went away with my wifes civic when changing from mobil 1 to GC..
So as far as the titan goes I would recommend either the GC 0w-30 or mobil 1 0w-40, basically you would be hard pressed to find anything better over any weather conditions then these two oils. Also with the ACEA A3 rating you know you have an oil that meets the most stringent tests and an oil truely capable of extended oil change intervals.
Hey SupraTitan, I'm waiting to see an oil analysis report for that GC!!
Also-folks, if you see Castrol Syntec 0w-30 it's only the good stuff if it says "Made in Germany" on the back. There is also a North American 0w-30 version that is Group III like the rest of the Syntec line.

Really i've never seen the made in USA 0w-30, luckily I always check. Is it still green? that way you know something is wrong the second you start pouring it in. I've got 4.7K on this run right now which is the second run of GC, truck has 14K on it, I'll take a sample or change it at 5K miles as i'm getting impatient myself LOL. All I know is fuel economy has been good on both runs, zero consumption. This sample will have a 4100 mile roadtrip on it. What is gonna be the test is this winter when I head north to go snowmobiling and its -40 out and I need the truck to start, which i'm confident will happen, But there isn't to many A3 oils that can pull that off.
I'm still using what the dealer puts in it, which is castrol GTX. I used to put mobil 1 syn in my maxima, don't know if it had any benifit to it, I was just going off of recommendations. With 4k miles on my truck now, I am considering changing to syn, but I really think I'm just wasting money, because I know I won't see 100k on this truck. Never kept a vehicle that long to get that many miles on it.
[quote]Just checked the number of views on the poll, we have 576 views but only 76 that posted their oil preference just wondering why most people are not voting as motor oil is one of the top discussed items on the forum.
My reason is that I have not changed my oil yet. Prior to my Titan, I had a Dodge R1500. I used whatever the lube place had which was usually Pennzoil or Vavoline. However, I am paying close attention to this thread for my first oil change.
I've used Havoline on my 86' Hardbody since new. It has close to 1/2 million miles. I just had the head gasket replaced for an anti freeze leak into the back cylinder. First time the head was off. No sluge build-up around valve springs. The aluminum has a golden shine. I changed the clutch after 300,00 miles. Just started to slip. I only pray that I will be driving my 04 Titan with as many miles.
My first tank full on my Titan got me 17 mpg. Has changing oil brands helped with mpg?

I just went to the Castrol website and emailed them this question. The lubricant division's phone number is 1-800-462-0835.

HAHAHAHA!!! Good luck with that. Castrol has been failing to answer oil geeks' questions for years.
The "GC" is really European "Castrol SLX", rebadged for sale in North America. No telling how long they will continue to import it.

The German Castrol is available at Autozone around here and it says "MADE IN GERMANY" on the back of the bottle.
