View Poll Results: What is your Titan's average gas mileage?
I just went up to and back down to Rhode Island from North Carolina..going up i was avg. bout 16-17 mpg freeway...that was going like roughly 70 the whole way..back down though i was surprised to calculate i was gettin 19-20 mpg..but than i only have 3500 miles on it now..so it must be breaking in or something..

I can't understand why my mileage doesn't compare with some other Offroad 4x4 Titans. I don't drive like a grandma, but I've tried to be consciencious about the pedal, sometimes very hard for a full tank of gas with 13.5 as a best??? I don't really get it unless I'm really hard on the pedal compared to some of you guys.
Either that or could it be that I sometimes let it idle for a few minutes rather than turn it off. Not sure if I'm willing to put more starts on it than necessary, but I might try it for one tank just to see if that's what is killing me. I know you guys are saying how bad idling is for mileage.

IMO, idling and city driving are mpg killers on this truck. For that reason, unless it's really cold (which doesn't happen often down south), I don't run it long before I drive it, although I don't push it hard for the first few miles. I average 15.5- 16 mpg on highway (when I drive it 75 or lower) and 12+/- (if I don't take on a few Fords, Chevy's or Dodge's) around town!

Ekool......maybe this should be a 3-part poll.............4 x 2's..........4 x 4 with the high gears and 4 x 4 with the low gears??????

Hey Tom, that's a good idea. With just 10 bubbles, (last time I looked), it is difficult to cover everything. I considered doing this, but since I couldn't start a thread in the Site polls area, they would end up all over General. I could have put in links to each, from each but ...
On my What is your best mileage gas ever poll, I tried addressed the issue by having a bunch of questions for everyone to answer in the thread portion. But only some answered them, and it was also a pain to summarize the results, which I only did once. For those that answered, and just looking at the best mileage members, there wasn't any apparent feature they had in common as they ranged across all styles and options.

Tall verses hi gears at identical rpm's???
Hi Swarren1.......yea I agree it is more complicated to separate into the 3 categories........for Titan "wannabees" it would be good to have the 3 realities of mpg's broke down and just great general info. I wonder if the tall gear and the low gear get similar mpg's if travelling at identiacl rpm's??????

I know the best I have gotten was 14.4 with 3/4 of the tank being driven straight highway & 69ish mph. I AVG around 13.4 with most of my driving being in 55-64 range on open 4 lane divideds w/ the occasional stop in go in town. I have a CC 4x4 w/Big Tow so I suppose its the setup.
Glad I love the Truck as much as it loves gasoline.

Hey Tom,
I agree it's a good idea, but at the time I was setting my poll up, I felt it might be frowned upon starting a bunch of simultaneous polls, by Adm., mods, or even other members.
As far as the identical rpms, that's a good question.
I don't have the answer to it, but it does sound like I'll be going a lot slower at the same rpm than someone with the higher gears.
For example, Squid has a 4X4 XE w/o BT* and w/o OR*, (higher gears), states: "BUT the truck never goes above 2000 RPM's.(going up a on ramp)and when I leave a stop light the RPM's never reach 1500 RPM's."
When I leave a stop sign, (gentle acceleration), my BT/OR is at around 2000 rpm or a little higher.
Squid also states, "Now I know for a fact that at 70 MPH I'm pulling 1600 RPM's and I've been told that Big Tow and Offroad are pulling 2000 Rpm's".
Well Squid, they didn't tell you wrong.
My BT/OR 4X4 Titan holds a steady 2000 rpm at 70 mph on level ground.
Here's my Titan's range:
70 mph = 2000 rpm
65 mph = 1900 rpm Note: Not much difference in rpm between 70 mph. (Not sure about fines).
60 mph = 1650 rpm
57 mph = 1600 rpm = Squid going 70 mph!!!
55 mph = 1500 rpm
50 mph = 1400 rpm
45 mph = 1200 rpm
Squid states: "I consistantly get 17.5 M.P.G."
My Titan ~14.5 mpg avg. Driving mellow.
She's a fish, but she knows how to treat me good. At least she drinks the relatively cheap stuff - Chevron 87.
I think the gears are the biggest factor, and maybe the Calif. Urban gas vs. Squid's rural.
With either the Big Tow* or Off-Road* pkg. the final gear ratio will be 3.357:1, which according to nissanusa.com is like a four-speed automatic 4.10:1. Without either of these packages, it will have a final gear ratio of 2.94, which nissanusa.com says is like a four-speed automatic 3.73. So, with lower gearing for towing or off-roading, plus the weight of the packages themselves, gas mileage will be less.

Thanks for the data........
swarren1.........you did a lot of good homework there. I wonder if Squid could try going 58-60 mph for a tank or two and see if and how much his mpg's go up?
As far as all the RPM data goes...this is a good "reference"......I did that with my last truck and then had my tach. checked......and like the odometer on my Titan.......it was off........it usually showed about 200 RPM lower than true which made me have the idle rpm set higher than needed. I figured it all out eventually but when the Toyo dealer said the entire instrument cluster needed replacement and they could not gaurantee it would solve the problem.......I just lived with it....no-one else could tell.
For 80% backroad driving I wonder if the low gears gets better mpg's than the tall gears????? Someone with the tall gears could compare there mpg's with mine if they are about 80% backroad use and in the mountains also.
I have a significant road trip coming on saturday wo I will check the mpg's on 100% hi-way driving at the 1,600 rpm range--58-60 mph......better bring a book!!lol
Changing air filters early verses late will effect overall mileage of all Titans like keeping the tires pumped up does also.
Just when does the Titan engine get broke-in and is that when the highest mpg's are consistantly obtained????

I know I have been getting an average of 14 mpg around town. I have not run any long trips with my laptop gps to see just how far off my gauges are. On the HW it was in the 15's but pulling a 6X10 enclosed utility trailer (~75mph)it averaged 11. It did go up to 16 once when I was in traffic and we were at a steady 60. All this is what the Nav screen said. I didn't work on the actual numbers my self. And now I have the gas gauge deal where it never gets to Full. It always stops at 3/4 and when the low fuel light comes on I still have 7ish gal left.

I think I've read that squid has a long commute each day. Other than good highway mileage, do think that starting the vehicle less often has an affect.
I often check the fuel guage at the end of the day and when I look again the following morning leaving the 'hood it looks like it has dropped almost a sixteenth!
My O.R. will barely stay at 2,000 RPM @ 70 mph. That's the least it will be. On takeoffs it is a real chore to keep it below 2,000 rpm, it acts like that's almost the stall speed of the converter. Offroad/Bigtow gearing is 14 percent lower than standard. Roughly 14 percent difference in highway mileage? Probably close. I figure the engine will always be spinning 14 % more at any speed. Not only that but the rpm's just seem to climb so easily.
I spent a day cruising a big junkyard in the snow Saturday so I can't count this tank although it was an average 11.7 mpg.
I filled up today and will hopefully be able to squeeze all I can out of it. No long idling, cruise the highway at 70 or less, maybe try to keep it at 2,000 rpm. Not use downshifting to slow down. I just want to see what I can get. Not that I can drive like this for any real period of time, but one tank is do-able
Well lower gearing is what I wanted and mileage is the tradeoff. Notice though I'm not complaining about doggy takeoffs

Avg MPG w/ 4% Correction = 14.4
Yeah, when you start often there's going to be a lot more idling, and a richer mix until warmed up, similar to a choke.
I have a fairly long commute as well, so this isn't a factor for me. A lot of slowing down and accelerations because of curves on a few sections though.
Do you know that your odometer is off, or just is this wishful thinking so you can add the 4%? Some have it but not everyone. I need to locate a Hwy. with the odometer test mileage signs up, to check mine out.
