Towing question

Ok folks - this is the first vehicle I have owned that is capable of towing anything substantial. I need to tow my track car this weekend and consequently need to buy a ball mount and ball (i have the big tow package). My thoughts are to get something that will tow up to the maximum towing capacity of the vehicle, even though at this time I won't be towing that much.

The vehicle I'll be towing weighs in at approx 2800 lbs and the trailer will be a uhaul rental (until i save up some money to get one of my own). So I think we're talking about 5000 lbs. Here is the vehicle:

Can anyone give me some suggestions on the type of ball mount I should get?
DO I need a WD system? Or can I do ok with a weight bearing ballmount?

The MSA show is the 24th of this month (600+ Z's last year).

The one in May is the Quality Nissan show and thats the meet.

Just thought you might be at the MSA show as a lot of 510's, 240's etc also show up there for the 'passion'. Where ya going with your car? Track day?

Go to Wally World and buy three different ball mounts with different drops and hitch your trailer to each one to see which one works best. Take the others back to Wally World that you did not use and get your money back.

I like the Convert-a-Ball system for hitch balls. I have three different hitch balls to go with it that I change out without useing tools. This comes in handy more often than I thought that it would.

Last, get a pin with a lock so that your ball mount, hitch ball, and pin won't get stolen.

Yes, buy several ball mounts as we don't trust you with a tape measure.

You definitely need to buy multiple ball-mounts to find one that levels the trailer. My car trailer needs a 4" drop on the mount and a 2" ball. Find out from U-Haul what size ball coupler they use on their trailers and make sure to get the right sized ball to match (2" or 2 5/16").

You won't need a WD or anything like that. I haul my race car on a trailer with my Titan fully loaded (gear, crew, parts etc) with absolutely no problems. Zero sway if balanced correctly. The UHaul trailers are HEAVY so go for the heavy duty mounts (10,000lb capacity) to be on the safe side. My rig is only 4000lbs but my trailer only weighs 1500lbs and the car 2100lbs.

Here's my track toy

Cheers,
...Colin

Colin,

Your track car looks nice - bet it is a lot of fun! I decided to wait to tow my car until the next event - want to let it break in a bit more. Right now I still only have 550 miles on the vehicle. Thanks for the info everybody.
