Fifth Wheel Hitch Anyone?

I was going to get a travel trailer, but found a really really nice 5th wheel that the Titan can pull. Is it a stupid idea to mess up the Utilitrack bed with the 5th wheel hitch. Plus is it possible to add helper springs so I won't be right at the maximum capicity of the truck? Thanks for the help.

Did your dealer where you are purchasing your trailer say you could be fitted for hitch work? I was inquiring a couple weeks ago about a fifth wheel and was told by the dealer they don't mak a hitch yet to fit for this to be done. In fact a worker there couldn't have it done with his '04 F-150 CC.

I was shown a picture of a titan pulling a 5th wheel trailer.

this was our purpose for purchasing the titan

the hitch was installed by a minneapolis hitch company called a and r welding.

That is who is going to install mine on the 26th. with a reese 16 slider

I've heard (through posters on RV.net) that there are some issues installing 5th Wheel hitches in the Titan as well as the '04 F150. I just read a post this morning on this. You can go to www.rv.net, go to the forums and search for the word "titan." The post was recent, today or yesterday.

Aw heck, here's an excerpt of the post

In Jan. of this year, we had a customer come to us with a Titan, wanting a 5th wheel hitch installed to pull a horse trailer. I had seen the commercial for the 1st time just days before when she pulled in with this vehicle. After test driving the Nissan, and the "new" F150, she raced back to purchase the Titan, to replace a '99 F150. Then the fun began. After 2 weeks for calling suppliers, asking questions, measuring, we ordered a HJ 5th wheel to install. And it didn't fit. The frame rails measured 40" across...no other 1/2 ton measured near that. No matter how we turned the 5'ver rails and brackets, they wouldn't fit without hitting a fuel supply (or fill), shock bracket, or frame drop. We spent 3 more weeks measuring, calling every hitch manuf. we could find, searching mags, calling dealers (Nissan and RV), and countless hours on the 'net to get nothing. Finally, after talking with the customer at great length, and being assured she wanted the truck only for towing (didn't care about cost or warranty issues or hauling stuff in the bed), I crawled into the bed with a large piece of cardboard, ruler, straight-edge, and pencil to lay a template.

She now has a steel plate in her bed to accomodate the 5th wheel and pulls her 2-horser with quarters confidently, on-road and off-road. The Titan is a STRONG truck for it's class, and perhaps may be a "Pearl Harbor" on the standard 1/2 tons. It's well built, horsey where it counts, and is the only 1/2 ton to offer a coil spring front.

BUT, no matter the power, looks, handling, or salesman's fast talking, be sure the products you need to do what you want are available. I'm still trying to find a "fit" 5'ver for this.

Hope it helps.

Had my Hijacker 5th wheel hitch installed on my Titan King Cab Le 4x4 and did not have to remove the Utilitrc from the bed. The only thing I took out were the rubber inserts as they were higher than the bed. They used the same brackets from the installation kit for the 04 F150, and simply welded on an extra 2" portion for the front brackets. They used a special wire that threads onto the bolts to fish them through the convenient large holes in the side of the box frame on the Titan. My hitch is solid just like the truck!
Oh yeah, I just slid the rubber inserts into the Utilitrac rails on the side of the bed!

what's this guy ? last time I checked all the manufactures use coil spring front suspensions (some only in 2wd while using torsion bars for 4wd)

Re: Fifth Wheel Hitch Anyone?

I have a 2007 Nissan Titan SE King Cab with the utility track system and I have a Valley 16K sliding 5th wheel hitch. Valley is the only manafacturer who sells a rail kit with brackets to fit the large Titan box frame. I have a 7000 pound 30 ft 5th wheel trailor that I have not towed yet. I will tow it this weekend! I have a Primus third brake controller as well. I will post a review on how it tows.

Re: Fifth Wheel Hitch Anyone?

I also have the Valley Kit designed for the Titan. Relatively simple self install, bolt on, no welding.

The fifth wheel hitch does not require the removal of the Utilitrack. It installs over the rails.

The addition of helper springs does not increase the Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of your vehicle. It does reduce the rear end sag and in doing so transfers that stress to your tires and axle.
I'm not saying you can't tow "X' amount of weight; just be careful.

Re: Fifth Wheel Hitch Anyone?

We were planning on purchasing a fifth wheel until we found out that the fifth weel hitch installation for our 04 crew cab would be about $3K. We purchased the same trailer layout in a travel trailer configuration.

Re: Fifth Wheel Hitch Anyone?

We have a 2006 King Cab.
I got a CP fixed hitch with Valley rails with our 85 Holiday Rambler 5th wheel. (We traded a 2002 Coleman popup even for it! hehehe!) On recomendation from this forum, I ordered the Titan custom bracket kit from Valley as well. It took about 5 hours, and we had to temporarily remove one shock, but got it in. The track system did not have to be removed.
Towed it the first time this weekend, and it did great, even without a slider. I noticed in the forum that those with sliders always seem to have never used them yet. We selected one of our favorite back-in spots and just parked it without even coming close to the cab.
The trailer is in amazingly great shape and everything works. (Even the furnace! Got down to 30 deg. this weekend!) It grosses 6000pds. Very happy all around!

Re: Fifth Wheel Hitch Anyone?

B&W makes a gooseneck hitch that installs quick and easy. They also make a 5th wheel adapter that mounts to the gooseneck hitch, no rails needed. When you aren't using the hitch, ball store out of the way, you have full use of the bed. A bit pricey but...

Re: Fifth Wheel Hitch Anyone?

I have a 24' fifth wheel and pull it with a 07 crew cab titan.. I used a standard set of Reese rails and a 16K hitch.. I did buy a device called a side winder that moves the pivot point back further to the end of the bed so the trailer doesn't impact the cab. Oh and yes I can close my tailgate ...... The issue with the short bed is left rear upper shock mount which can be a real problem of mounting the the left side of the rails to the frame due to lack of clearance... It can be done but finding someone that has the skill and patience to do it might be a problem.. I will post some pics of them hooked up..
