my tow mode only works in "D"...when I push the man shift button, it lights up "4", and the tow button doesn't work....it only works when the shifter is in auto "D".
Tow mode must work differently with the column shifter then. I have the console shifter between the two front seats=no manual shift button. I can put it in tow mode with the shifter in any position. Can anyone confirm that tow mode works differently with a console vs. column shifter? Check out these related threads. Seems to be some differences in other people's experiences too. Interesting.

I have the column shifter and it only lights up when the tranny is in D only. Equipment that is this expensive, I would want some safety built in, not to limit me but to save me. The Allison I had had safety features that didn't limit you too bad unless you really poured the power to it.
I do scan my guages about once a minute b/c I like to know if everything is alright but I don't want to keep my eye on it constantly when pulling hills. I really wouldn't think there would be a transmission heating problem with the push and pull fans on the tranny cooler.
Yep, you're right that tow mode will change the shift points. But it won't keep it out of overdrive. Always tow in 4th. If you insist on towing in overdrive on flat roads, then keep a sharp eye on the tranny temp and knock it into 4th if the guage starts to inch higher than normal operating temp.
If your load is under 2000 lb, you can use 5th. But anything above use 4th.

My tow mode works with a column shifter but youhave to push the tow mode button first then the manual shift button. if you tried to do it the other way around it wont work. so yes you can use tow mode in 4th gear with a column shifter can anyone else cofirm this for me thanks
Im not sure it this is the same as the Dodge I used to own. But It would only lock-up the converter in the highest gear you selected. For example, if you were in O/D it would lock-up "4th" but not third. If you selected "drive" or 3rd, it would lock that gear up. Ive never noticed my titan going into lock-up in fourth if the gear selector was in 5th. But it will lock up in fourth if i select fourth. I dont think it will lock the converter in any gear below 4th though. At least this seems to coincide with the charts posted on the last page.

The torque converter will lock up in 4th and 5th if in Drive, and only 4th if in 4th (manual).
Using an 04 Titan Off Road with Towing Package and towing an 8,000 travel trailer. At 45-50 mph on level road with no wind tansmission fluid gauge rises to high normal level and drops when speed is reduced. Anyone have similar problems, especially with a tow and in the mountains?
I tow a 9,000lb+ trailer with my 2004 Nissan King Cab LE 4X2 with big tow and here is my experience. DO NOT tow in 5th gear at all! EVER! It will fry the transmission real fast due to excessive heat. Tow on normal flat ground in 4th. When pulling a grade I quickly figured out that at low RPM's pulling a grade I was slipping the torque converter and the Tranny guage would go through the roof! Downshift and get the RPM's back up and the tranny temp will fall before your eyes. Good luck and happy towing.

People, tow mode buttom helps, but it is up to the driver to check the temperature, and if a hill in front of you then use 4th if it is too big then 3rd, or which ever gear the truck demands, we are the drivers not the computer, ... people say I hit the tow mode the transmition should think and downwshift when nessesary, well yes, it should but the computer's first priority is fuel mileage, at the expense of the transmition, if it was the way around where the computer watching over the transmition, then it would be at the expense of the gas mileage, and Nissan would not make friends if the truck uses too much gas.... bad press.
So it is up to us to watch the transmition temp. and not the tow mode switch, or computer.
peace
Well thank you. We love it. It's a 25' Attitude made by Eclipse RV out of San Bernardino, CA. The box is actually 26' though and total from hitch to bumper is almost exactly 30'. She is no lightweight (Especially loaded with a 520lb Quad, Nearly 1,000lb Golf Cart, and 1,000lbs of Water) but the Titan pulls her with no problem. Over Thanksgiving we went to Dumont Dunes, CA and I even pulled right by my buddy pulling a lighter toyhauler with a 2500HD Chevrolet with a 6.0L Gas motor. You can bet I was giving him Hell at the first gas stop.

Just purchased a LE crew with big tow. I noticed that several here have
towed 8,000 lb. trailers. Am looking at a 7,000 lb unit and an 8,000 lb unit,
both dry. I've read other forums where people say a Titan should not be used
for such a unit. Please respond with your experience. Thanks.

The only reason they are saying that is because of the history Toyota has done to peoples minds. The Titan is the most capable truck of this type of work out of all the 1/2 tons out.
