Big Towers - what's your max tongue/pin weight?

I know the payload is 1,250-1,650 pounds, and the tongue weight is 920-950, but what have you had on the truck? And how did the truck look? Crushed or normal? Thanks, about to get a big trailer....

I hitched up my travel trailer just to see how it would look, and was very pleased. The tongue weight is somewhere around 700 lbs. The trailer when loaded weighs about 5000 lbs. When the trailer is hooked up with the weight distribution bars connected, the trailer is level and the truck still sits a little high in the rear end. So if I put some gear in the truck bed, the truck should not squat low in the rear. I found that I only needed to use the third chain link on the weight bars, rather than the fourth as I did with the Tundra. I have the Big Tow package. I haven't towed the trailer yet, but I'm sure it will do just fine.

about the same weight here also, I also found that I went from the third link to the second link on the distribution bars. Tacoma also.
I had a couple of hundred pounds of firewood in the back of mine so it made the rear come down about level.

My trailer weighs 7590# ready for the desert with quads and stuff. Not sure what the tongue weight is, I don't have a scale. I would guess my tongue to be somewhere around 1000# loaded. Toyhauler tend to have very heavy tongue weights. When I towed it to Albuquerque the rear end went out, but before that it was doing fine. The truck and trailer sat nice and level. I didn't have any sway issues or anything. I am now real leery about towing with it again. I will be trying it out in a few weeks and let you know.

Well, I should be towing a nice heavy travel trailer before that. Sure hope it doesn't go out on me. Be really embarrasing...

Just remember to check your rear diff fluid level, and change it more often when towing.

bluesun, I should have mentioned that I have towed my travel trailer in some pretty steep places, all without any problems. On the interstate I just left the transmission in drive, and pushed in the tow mode button. For the most part it would stay in high gear, but when it did down shift going up a grade the rpm's only went up about 200. Unlike the toyota, I had to keep it out of overdrive all the time and doing 60 mph it would be turning 3000 rpm's. I couldn't beleive the difference this truck has made, you can hardly tell the trailer is back there even when a semi blows by,no sway or anything.
Luck,
Daryl

Re: Big Towers - what's your max tongue/pin weight?

I have a homemade 5th trailer that I bought. It's built like a tank. The trailer weighs 3500 and the hitch weighs around 250 or so. I had a load of lumber of 14300 on the trailer (14300 + 3500 + 250) 18050 and it towed well. It's all on how the trailer is loaded. I keep most of it up front in the 60/40 split this it pulls on along. I normally have 7000-11000 on the trailer at least one a week and have a 3 hour trip.

Re: Big Towers - what's your max tongue/pin weight?

Mine is around 1000# loaded. I do have the firestone ride-rites and the stillen front and rear sway bars. The trailer is around 7500# loaded and the truck tows it fine. I also use WD hitch. Before airbags I couldn't put much more than 700-750# before I got real rear end sag. I ( knock on wood) have had no problems towing this much with my rear end.

What do the front and rear sway bars do for you?

Re: Big Towers - what's your max tongue/pin weight?

My tongue weight was 900lbs empty. When I am fully loaded I am very close to 1000lbs.
This is how it looks hitched up.

The sway bars help prevent truck sway and body roll keeping the truck much more stable.
