Isn't the payload only about 1500 pounds? How are you going to manage a 5th wheel hitch and yourself and gas? I have found a trailer I love, but my LE 4x4 can't handle the 1600 pound pin weight. Or am I just missing something?

With the towing and offroad package the towing capacity is 9200 pounds.
Interior passenger volume (cu. ft.) 113 113 113
Fuel tank (gals.) 28.0 28.0 28.0
Maximum towing capacity (lbs.)
Standard 6,500 7,400 7,200
With Big Tow Package N/A 9,500 9,200
Maximum payload (lbs.)
4x2 1,640 1,640 1,640
4x4 1,508 1,508 1,508
So the LE can pull 9,200 pounds, it can NOT carry that much in the bed, or in the truck. The LE can carry on it's own four wheels either 1,640 pounds or 1,508 pounds. Now, you must subtract gas and your self from this if you want to be technically correct. But let's just say you get to put 1500 pounds of weight in the truck. If you have a wife, there is 130 (hopefully...) and also subtract any gear. Now the travel trailers I have been looking at in the 7,000 pound range have a hitch weight of 700 pound or so, leaving me 800 pounds for gear, girlfriend, etc, in the truck. The 5th wheel I saw (Keystone outback Sydney edition) only weighed 9,000 pounds. However, as a 5th wheel, they generally have 15-20% of the weight being supported by the truck. So their pin weight is 1500 pounds. Which means once I hook up the trailer, I shouldn't be able to ride in the truck, much less carry any other gear or heck, even the hitch.
Plus, someone actually had listed the axle capacity of the Titan on this site. It was very very low. So you can go ahead and overload the truck, but with the axles rated that low I wouldn't feel safe. Note that if you have an accident and the cops add up the numbers, your insurance will not cover you and you will be liable to be sued.
Try Rv.net if you want way too much info on this. I wish I could get that trailer, but with the axle rating so low, I can't even get airbags or anything to beef up the capacity....maybe next year....

my hitch weight luckily is ok, but thanks for pointing this out to me.
I was only concerned by the towing capacity. didnt realize there was another thing to consider.
I think the titan is a great truck but I do not think it is suited for a fifth wheel. You are going to exceed the pay load weight of the truck. The Titan is rated for a payload weight between 1453 and 1640 depending on which model you have. You will probally exceed that when you figure tongue weight, passengers, cargo and the hitch itself. I think you are better off with a travel trailer and weight distrbution hitch. I have towed alot of travel trailers and I do not think the titan and a fifth wheel are safe.

What trailer are you towing? Did both Reese and Nissan approve this hitch? Last time I checked it was not approved, but that was a month ago. I was ready to write a check for a KC 4x2 when I found that out and cancelled the order. Probably made someone else in line happy. Al in Benson, AZ

Makes sense although I think the payload capacity includes the driver but not everything else you mentioned. Also, there are many 5th wheels that have pin weights closer to 10%. You pack your wife in the front seat and kids in the back and the majority of cargo in the trailer (closer to the back so it doesn't add pin weight and you are fine.
That said, I have always preferred the smaller TT's (under 30ft) not be 5th wheels. I have many reasons for this but one is at this size, the 5th wheel doesn't pull any better than a TT with a good weight distributing hitch and sway controller. Heavier trailers are better being 5th wheels.
Another fact for the TT is for a given length is lighter and more roomy on the inside, IMO.
