Question RAS and Air Bags?

Well, I ordered my RAS (4611 MK4-XXF) on 12 April, and was told it was backordered and won't ship until 27 April; but I need something to help when I tow our Boy Scout trailer this weekend on a campout (~ 6,000#). I was thinking of getting the Firestone Ride-Rite air bags, and install them tomorrow for the trip.

So my questions are:
1) Has anyone installed BOTH the Firestone air bags and the RAS (new one)?
2) Is it even possible?
3) If so, would ride be too stiff?
4) If not, which one should I keep?

Thanks,
Tim

Re: RAS and Air Bags?

Im a fan of the RAS. I tow a 7K# trailer at least once a month and love that I dont have to air up every time then air down. This is just my opinion and I'm sure every one else will chime in soon. I don't think you could run both. The bags would have to extend the spring of the RAS and I'm not sure how that would work. It may make the RAS not as effective. I have the new style ras and installation was easy. If you have the bed side box you will need a stubby wrench for adjustment. Here is my install thread.

Re: RAS and Air Bags?

I am in the same predicament right now. I am having trouble deciding if I want the ease of use of the RAS or the customized settings of the Air Bags. Plus I can get the Air Bags with on board compressor for abut $50 cheaper than the RAS. Any suggestions.

Re: RAS and Air Bags?

Well, hauled the Troop trailer on the campout without either bags or RAS, just inflated the tires to 70psi. Did fine, but can't wait until my RAS comes in to see/feel the difference they'll make. Got 9.39mpg going out (~150mi one way) and 10.03mpg coming back.

Sidebar question: when someone sells something on eBay, shouldn't they have it in stock, or am I just assuming this? Bought the RAS off of drivetrain_parts on 11 April; the ad said it'd ship 13-19 April. I inquired on 20 April and he replied they are on backorder and should ship 27th or 30th. As of this posting they still have not shipped!! He gets a positive comment for prompt replies to my emails, but negative for not having the part.
