Wow do people get confused with something as simple as an automatic transmission. First of all its best to think of the "manual mode" as more of a gear lock out. Thats all it is, there really is nothing manual about it, if the selector is on 4th it can still go to any gear but 5th. Then its just a matter of common sense. If your pulling a 1500 pound utiliity trailer, there is no reason to put tow mode on and drive in 4th unless you just want to burn more gas. In fact I pull my snowmobile trailer (approx. 3K lbs) in 5th without tow mode, I just "manually" drop it to 4th when approaching a large hill or needing to pass. Pulls 5th fine on flat ground or down hill(no brainer) at 75-80mph. At the 75% GCVWR I would only hit D going down hill and other non-straining cruising. Common sense will go a long way as all this is concerned.
[quote=HudsonValleyTitan]"when you drop the vehicle into 4th, what you are actually doing is using the "manual mode". The vehicle is no longer trying to act like an automatic, it is trying to let you make the decisions.
That is only about 20% true. By putting the tranny into 4th gear you are only locking out 5th gear. The tranny will still shift automatically from 1st to 4th gear. There is a lot of terrain in this country where you do not want to let the tranny up shift when climbing steep grades. It is also an absolute must that you put the tranny in 2nd or third gear when going down steep grades, otherwise you will wear out your brakes.

Just note that your quote was not mine, but something I quoted someone else as saying....and had to laugh at it. You're right, it only blocks out 5th. There is no "manual mode".

You've apparantly not read your owner's manual (section 5-14 in the 2004 book) or played with the feature. There is indeed a "manual mode" that allows you to choose your gear. It's not a "stick", but it does allow you to say, force it into 2nd, 3rd or 4th while driving 45mph (which is in the allowable range for all of those gears.) That is "manual" enough to be of some use. And yes, Nissan does refer to it as a "manual mode" (verbatim.)
Now if you want to get personally insulting just because I don't agree with your views, go right ahead. No skin off my tushi.

Relax Chuck, it wasn't a personal attack.....I found it funny the way you described it. You can quote the manual all you like, shifting out of 5th is not a "manual mode". It just locks out the gear above it, it doesn't keep it in the gear you select. Your description wasn't too clear, and sounded like you thought it to be an actual manual shift. Sorry if it was misunderstood but...now that kills the funnt in it!!!

I can't believe y'all are still having this "manual mode" discussion. Nissan can call in anything they want, but all it does when you "manually" select a particular gear is prevent it from automatically shifting up to a higher gear.
It will still automatically shift down to lower gears as the computer dictates. You can't, for instance, select "3" and keep it in third. It will not go up to "4" or overdrive, but it will still shift down. In this example you then have a three speed automatic. Gears 1, 2, and 3 are in play, but 4 and 5 are not.

I think the only difference here is point-of-view. It's not silly to think of it either way. If the "manual-mode" as Nissan describes it is achived with gear-lockouts, then it is. It's still a mode in which you can, within reason, pick your gear.
It may not be 100% analogous to a stick shift, but in many circumstances can be used in much the same way. If I'm coasting down a hill, I can hit that button and decide precisely which gear I want to descend in, using the shifter.
Call it manual mode, call it hybrid, call it automatic with a lockout, I don't care. I just don't want anyone to take someone's advice who states that there is no good reason, ever, to manually pick one of these gears. There are times when it can be beneficial (even necessary) or automakers wouldn't go through the hassle of building it in.

I'm done. Y'all keep it going as long as you want. It's beat to death. The only gear you can put it in and keep it there is first! Any other number you select will still AUTOMATICALLY downshift.

It has been doing ok - have not pulled with it since!
Update on Towing - When I towed a Bobcat I had no problems. The rental place kept saying I needed a 3/4 ton to pull the Bobcat. I kept saying my truck can handle the weight no problem. Always keep in mind that when pulling something as big as a Bobcat -- get off the gas long before you need to stop. Otherwise the weight in the trailer can push you along and jackknife you.

as for shifting... no need, just put it in 4th and drive 90... that should give you the rpm's and power needed to keep tranny from ****ing and hunting big tow or not... heck you can probably use 5th too as the tach will read well over 2000 nonBT and close to 3 with BT....
Can someone explain the whole 'manual' shift thing again? .....just kidding.
wow, what a thread!
