Question Installing Hitch and Wiring Trailer Brake Light Plug

I am fixing to install a hitch on my truck to pull just a light trailer and an 18' aluminum bass boat. What I was wondering was when I wire up the brake light plug (flat 4), am I going to need to install a relay??? I saw somewhere on this forum that some people were having to buy relays and installing them. Was that just for electric trailer brakes or what? Any information would be appreciated.

I just installed my hitch this weekend. I ended up having to buy the relays since my SE didn't have the tow package. A earlier post said that the relays are standard for CC - wrong. Spent $35 for both relays (Trailer 1 and Trailer 2) at the dealer. I don't have the part number for the 4 Pin trailer light harness - I'll try to get this afternoon. All in all - $167 for the relays, Trailer Light Harness, and CL III hitch. Took approx. 12 minutes to install the hitch myself (6 bolts) and lighting harness. The vast majority of the time was lowering the spare out of the way to bolt on the hitch (first time to lower the spare - had to figure it out!)

Which hitch did you go (Nissan or aftermarket) and why? How much was the hitch? I'm in same boat you are, no big tow pkg, but will be doing some light towing in the near future.

I got my hitch for $105 (Curt CL III) + Tax from Goodsell Truck Accessories in Jacksonville, AR. Your right, the wiring harness was a 2 second plug-in. ($15.50) My Titan didn't even feel the boat (Grumman 17.5 ' w/50 Evinrude) when I towed it yesterday. Going to try the party barge this weekend - heavier plus more drag.

The trailer wiring kit that I used is the Hoppy 41155 (the package shows Chev, GMC, Olds, Cadillac) but it also works on the Titan. I paid $15.62. Works as advertised.

rcflier,

The class III is a 5000 lb hitch correct? If I want to go up to the ful rating of 6500, I guess I will need a class IV hitch, is that correct?

What additional parts does the Big Tow include that my truck doesn't?

A lot depends on the manfacturer concerning hitches. If I remember right, the Curt can go to 5500 lbs. You might want to consider a CL IV hitch if you plan to haul huge loads. My biggest thing to tow is a 21' party barge (about 3k lbs). I would do some searching on the Web for CL IV hitches if you think the CL III won't be able to do the job, or go to Nissan to get the CL IV hitch (truck specialty stores can give you a better price). The hitch is very easy to install, just 6 bolts. The Big Tow package basically gives you a different gear ratio in 1st 2nd & 3rd gears(if I remember right), a tranny temp gauge, and a hitch w/a 7 pin connector. (I know this is for an SE) I'm not sure what other changes it is with the XE. Hopefully this helps

I am going to have a hitch installed from Uhaul when I get home from work in about 8 days. The person at Uhaul said I only needed one relay for the trailer lights to work. Is this correct? For the hitch with "included" relay they quoted me $200 +tax. Hope they're not putting it to me here. I've had Uhaul hitches before and never had any problems with them that's why I decided to go with them again.

I never any trouble with a U-Haul hitch on a mini-van that I had, but after doing the research, its saved me a few $$ to do it myself . With six bolts for hitch install, a 2 second wiring harness install, and sweet talking the dealer into getting both relays for $35 (they still made money) which I installed in 5 seconds (they only fit one way, so that can't be screwed up), I was able to spend the savings on something else - gas for the beast!!
