For those towing 6000# +

Yesterday I traded in my 3500# trailer for a 6100# trailer and was wondering how that will affect my gas mileage/range. Given the fact that I'm a leadfoot, the best I could do before was 9mpg. With the new trailer, I will definitely slow it down. While I expect the results to be wide and varied, any feedback would be helpful. (NO need to elaborate on the "don't tow in fifth, don't use cruse control" - been there, done that.) I would also enjoy any pics of your rigs for comparisons sake.

tow mileage

Checked my mileage towing a 3000 lb popup camper on a 900 mile round trip to the mountains of NE Alabama. Was my first time towing so I followed the advice of the manual and did not exceed 50 mph for first 500 miles...well I may have cheated a bit. I did not use the tow mode and did use my cruise control wiothout any problem. My averagew mileage after 3 tanks was 16.6 mpg...not bad in my opinion!

We get between 9-11 towing our 7000# Arctic Fox. As for aerodynamics, it's a brick, so I tend to tow at about 60. I tried going 55 and the gas mileage jumps to a solid 11, but I guess I'm just too impatient.

Yeah, it'll go faster, but I'm more conservative when towing.

I'll take a stab at attaching a pic here.

Hey Steamguy,
Was the photo of your Titan and travel trailer taken at Harbor Vista Campground near Florence, Oregon? Sure looks like it. Was just there last weekend. Good looking truck and trailer!

Yup, that's it, it's the County's campground if I remember right. Nice place, a little hard to find, but only one really nice spot with a view. As you can see, the spot to the side of us only has our Titan to look at, and... hey wait a second. That would make TWO spots with a great view!

Hey Steamguy, if you're ever up to it, meet you at the 1000 Trails resort in Pacific City! Beautiful view and you can drive on the beach!

Pulling a 3000# pop-up shouldn't effect mileage much at all....as seems to be the case. There's no mass to catch the wind.

Last summer with our Sedona Titan pulling our 2700 lb popup I averaged an easy 17 mph doing 55-60 mph tow mode was not on. Towing a 22' Nash TT we averaged between 9-10 mpg with an average speed of 55-60 mph, that TT weighed in at around 7000 lbs.

Have a new TT now, weighs 4476 lbs empty and has a GVWR of 6200 lbs. Don't have a good figure on it yet since we have only towed it once with the white Titan and could have sworn it weighed 20k lbs..........nah, just the rear end giving up in the truck. *sigh*

Will be towing it next week with the new *improved* rearend in the Titan.

Lightbulb My towing setup

I had a 18' Prowler light 5th wheel that I got 13-14 MPG towing. I now have a 21' Sandpiper 5th (weighed in at 6200 LBS loaded) that towing the same route I got 9-10 MPG. I will post some pictures of the rig tonight.

The plan is to double tow a boat (2400 LBS) behind the 5th to Havasu on the 22nd. I am praying for 8+ MPG!

Before anyone freaks for double towing I'm within GCVW at 14300 max loaded and have my class A commercial license and am under max length at 62 feet.

My trial run will be this weekend so I will get some pics of both trailers connected.

At 8600 lb towing this is why I want the PML diff cover so bad, 2 more orders needed before production starts get yours here (Squid!)

I tow a 20 ft enclosed car trailer. Weighs just under 7000 lbs loaded. Has a nice brick shape for aerodynamics. I tow a bit on the fast side, about 75 mph give or take. I consistently get about 8 mpg on the large hills of PA and surrounding states. Overall the truck tows really nicely. I always use tow mode or it hunts. 5th is too tall for most moderate grades. Tow mode fixes that no problem. Usually gets the right gear and holds it.

Well, not to break any bubbles, but I towed an 8K 6-horse slant from Texas to GA an averaged 12-13 MPG......cruising at or around 65 MPH......go figure. I have mods and some that ppl might think are "gay" or funny, but have worked for me over the years. PM me for details.....
