Truth in towing claims?

One of the reasons I bought a Titan was that my 1995 Jeep Cherokee was not up to towing my 2400 lbs boat. I remember being really dismayed the first few times I towed the boat with the Jeep as the owner's manual said up to 5000 lbs towing capacity. The Jeep could tow but I could tell it was not very happy about it and would start to run really hot.

Nissan claims that a CC Titan can tow 9200 lbs. Anyone else think this is an exageration too?

Nope,

Just take a look at a thread titled "what do you tow"? I personally tow a 28' Bayliner, somewhere around 8700# or so I would guess. No problem.

It depends if you have the big tow package or not. If you dont have the big tow package then yes it is an exaggeration. I think it would be a stretch if I think my truck could to 9500 lbs. It doesnt have the big tow.

The non big tow has a rating of 7000 or something like that.

The manual states the rating for each package.

The ease of towing would also depend on the trailer. A flatbed full of rocks would tow easier than a large profile camper of the same weight.

My 94 cherokee 4x4 (98K miles) towed my Aerolite 19' travel trailer fine for two years @ 5000 miles. Loaded wt. @4500#. I did install a three core rad., prodigy brake control and a class III hitch. I wanted a more dependable tower and planned on getting a larger TT. So, I found this site, did a lot of reading and bought my new 04Titan last year and upgraded to an 06, 28ft Rockwood 8272S this year. The Titan pulls it GREAT!!! I'm looking foreward to many years of driving, towing and camping. The Jeep is my "work truck" and the Titan my "pleasure and tow truck". Love my Titan!

My dad has towed over 9,000 lbs with a 1965 Ford van with a inline 6. "Towing capacity" is a subjective term. Just like "load capacity". I've hauled over 2500 lbs in 1/2 ton trucks many times, and I had almost 4,000 lbs in my paren'ts 1 ton.

I tow a travel trailer weighing in at over 8k LBS and ....no, it's not exagerated at all. At times I actually forget it's back there. There's a hige difference in towing with a big V8 and with a V6. I had an 02 Superchanrged V6 Frontier and towed a trailer with 3 ATVs and it hated every minute of it....but it did it. My thought is....it's not always HOW MUCH it can tow, but HOW it tows. I don't pretend to suggest towing up to it's full potential of 9500 LBS, but it CAN do it if need be. Remember, this is more of a 3/4 ton than a one ton....as are most 1/2 tons trucks today.

Forgot to mention I do have the big tow package. Nice to know I shouldn't have any problems should I get a camper some time in the future. Thanks for sharing.

Get a good WD hitch, tow using TOW MODE, tow in 4th, and have the new TSB for the wiring harness done by Nissan (They just add some sort of fusable link under the dash in case of a short in the trailer lights) and you're good to go.

Here's the link for info on the trailer wiring TSB:
