Equal-i-zer Hitch

I'm going to be towing with the Titan for the first time this weekend... and using an Equal-i-zer hitch for the first time as well. Any sage advice on using the hitch?

It's the 1000/10,000 lb. version and will be towing about 6,500 lbs total. Not sure of my hitch weight.

Re: Equal-i-zer Hitch

Doesnt sound like you really need it but it will pull better. Are you towing a TT or utility trailer? I tow around 6500# TT with just a sway bar, double axle brakes and Draw tite brake box. The tongue weight is 680#. And it levels me out to where I am sitting perfect.

Re: Equal-i-zer Hitch

This is a travel trailer. It's a 1992 27' Holiday Rambler. It's been on the scales and came out to 7000 lbs., but I figure we'll be going a bit lighter than that. I'll be using the Prodigy Brake controller too.

Re: Equal-i-zer Hitch

It's an Aluma-Lite XL, no slides. Dry weight is around 4500 supposedly.

Re: Equal-i-zer Hitch

Yea that hitch is a little overkill IMO the Titan will haul that weight easily! But it will give you a more stable ride and is probably the differance between having 2 hands on the steering wheel or 1 hand. Have you towed with it yet?

Re: Equal-i-zer Hitch

Haven't towed yet. We just bought the trailer last weekend. We also have a tent trailer (now for sale on Craigslist) but we hadn't had a chance to take it out this summer.

Re: Equal-i-zer Hitch

Did your set up come with the sway bar. IMO that is a must. That makes the difference between having 2 hands on the wheel comfortably and white knuckling with every muscle in your body tensed up. You should have no probs with that weight and that set up best of luck to ya!

Re: Equal-i-zer Hitch

I tow a 28'6' tt (5000lbs) and use an Equal-i-zer hitch. I would not tow with out it. I tow around 70- 75mph with no problems at all. It is very wise to use anything you can to help you tow better. Sounds like you have a good setup! Have fun!

Re: Equal-i-zer Hitch

Eddie Trojan,

Welcome to the ownership of the FINEST hitch made. Way back when I was an RV salesman that is the Only hitch I would recommend. It cost a little more than the traditional style with a sway bar, but it is more than twice as effective. The unique nature of the hitch using the torsion arms as the sway control is a bonus. You will also love the fact that you don't have to risk life and limb to hook the levelers up, and you can do it from ANY angle. The other style has to be almost dead on straight to hook up. PM me if you have any questions, I don't get to geek nearly as much with the new job so I can't promise to check this before you tow with it.

Good luck and congrats, the HR is a superb TT and you are close enough to your guesstimate on the weight loaded. For a long weekend add between 150 to 200 pounds for each person, and about 200 pounds for groceries and cooking gear.

Coming from a pop up, the sagest advice I can give is on the sewer/black water tank. If you are only going out for 3 to 5 days, don't waste your money on chemicals for the BW tank. Add 10 gallons of water to the tank, and you will never smell a thing. Check out the forum for RV owners at RV.net

Re: Equal-i-zer Hitch

Great advise bhudda! I wasnt aware that the torsion arms were the sway control! How does that work? I just have the basic friction sway control. Does the equilizer provide better sway control? And is it adjustable like my friction sway control bar?

Re: Equal-i-zer Hitch

Also bhudda what benifits can the equilizer give me other than raising the back of the truck? I am sitting very level with the weight. So am I fooling myself to think I dont need one? With the sway set up I have now and the dual axle brakes I have no issues towing my TT.

The weight is the friction control. When you use the load levelers on the Equal-I-Zer(sp?) they run through and control the sway by friction. They are not adjustable like yours, but that is also a benefit. Too many times those "Add on" styles bind up and hamper your control.

Thanks Bhudda! My parents are full-timers and gave essentially the same advice on the tank chems too.

Looking forward to our first road test this Sunday... now if I can just find a wiring diagram for the Prodigy Brake Controller. I'll search the forums first, then maybe start a new thread.

Can't believe it took me this long to post here - you guys are great!
