Which model brake controller should I get?

I'm sure this was discussed before but after a couple hundred searches here for the answer I figured posting the question would be easier.

I have a 2007 Nissan Titan Crew Cab with Tow Package.

I'm buying a 2006 SeaRay Sundeck 240 26 foot boat with tandem axel trailer which has trailer breaks.

Which Break Controller is recommended. I see they cost anywhere from 60 to $120 depending on what you buy but I have no clue what will work the best.

Thanks,
Chris

Re: Which model brake controller should I get?

I bought the Prodigy controller. Rated as best on the market. You can also buy a Titan wiring harness for around $15 witch makes it plug and play. Works great with my 25' TT. I think I paid around $140 for the unit at a local rv store. I'm sure you can find it cheaper on the net.

Re: Which model brake controller should I get?

Chris,

First let me congratulate you on your new purchase. Second I’ll chime in on the Prodigy brake controller and if you buy it from RVWholesalers:

http://rvwholesalers.com/catalog/pro...0&cat=6&page=1

for $99 I believe you get free shipping.

I have a prodigy too. Ultimately adjustable and easy to use.

You got electric brakes on your boat trailer? Or do you just want the controller to round out your truck?

I was told the trailer comes with electric brakes. It is a Magic Tilt Tadem Trailer TML2460

So I'm just trying to get prepared for it. When we bought the Titan back in Jan we got it with the tow package knowing that one day we would have a boat to tow well that one day is right around the corner now.

Ordering from RVwholesalers would be great and free shipping is great but it's UPS ground and I HATE UPS! They always take 10+ days to deliver anything to me. Fedex ground is always cheaper and faster. Anyways I will need this break controller for when I go pick up the boat in about 6 days.

Seems like everyone talks about the prodigy so it must be the one to get.

Thanks for the replies.

Re: Which model brake controller should I get?

Congrats on the boat purchase. I have a 19' Maxum (3,800) and a 25' Aljo TT (6,000 lbs dry) Tows boat and TT no problem.

Here's a cool site for boat owners, its run by a cop on the Parker strip in Arizona.

Re: Which model brake controller should I get?

Prodigy is by far the best. I got mine new in the box off ebay (buy it now) for $77 shipped. I had it in 2 days, priority mail.

Re: Which model brake controller should I get?

Well thanks for eveyones help but it turns out the breaks are not electric they are surge disc breaks. If this is good or bad I don't know. Good I don't have to buy a break controller so I save about $100 but are surge breaks better worse or the same?

I have a couple other questions now that I've learned more about this boat trailer but it's not on the same topic as the original question but I'll go ahead and ask.

The trailer requires a 2" ball. No problem. The question though is the drop and rise of the receiver I didn't realize there were so many options. I ended up picking up a kit from Walmart for $25 which has the 2" ball a 3 1/4" drop receiver and a lock all in one kit (was a better deal then buying seperatly).

So about the drop I would guess there is no way to really tell until I back the truck up to this trailer as to what amount of drop I need. First I was thinking truck it's up higher need the bigger drop 3 1/4" but then looking at it maybe I don't need 3" maybe 2" or none at all.

Also had to buy a plug converter to convert the round plug on the titant to a 5 wire flat plug (5th wire I'm told is so it knows when he truck is in reverse so it can disengage the brakes)

Thanks for everyones help and input.

Re: Which model brake controller should I get?

Tekonsha Prodigy seems to be the number one trailer brake controller. I have had mine for a couple of years now and it works flawlessly.

Re: Which model brake controller should I get?

Surge brakes suck...I tow a 24' Mariah boat (6400 lbs wet) The surge brakes are a pain in the butt. I don't think that there is any other way to brake a submersible trailer though...have fun and be safe
