Prodigy settings.

What do you guys normally keep your setting at for a 5000 to 8000 pound trailer?

Re: Prodigy settings.

I have mine on the highest boost (c.3 I think that is ), and the I think I'm at about 2/3 to 3/4 of the way up on the gain. Trailer is at about 6000 lbs.

Re: Prodigy settings.

I've been towing with the Prodigy now for about 4 years and usually adjust after the brakes heat up a bit and then adjust by feel. After a while you can just tell where to put the dial. Usually the balance between not feeling the trailer during breaking and having the trailer pull the truck.

Re: Prodigy settings.

First you do the initial setup test on a flat dry surface and find out where the trailer brakes don't quite lock up, mine is set at 5.8 Then I think it activates the boost. Usually when the brakes aren't warmed up yet or in rush hour traffic, I have the boost on b1 or b2, normal driving I go back to the 5.8 setting. Down hill I'll have it back on b1.

Hope that helps?

Re: Prodigy settings.

well one of the trailers i tow is a dump trailer. So the weight varies from 2000 pounds empty up to 8 or 9 thousand pounds full. I'm not sure how well the brakes work because when i first pulled the trailer the brakes wouldn't lock even with it set around 9.0. They did lock after i came out of the wet muddy dump so i turned it down. To me it seems kinda random how it works. Today i was pulling it almost empty and it seemed to be working fine with it at 8.5 and b1. On one of my stops i hit the brakes and really felt the trailer stopping the truck.

Re: Prodigy settings.

8.0 on the setting for me, 6000 lb travel trailer. Boost 1 sometimes or no boost depending on speed and conditions.

When adjusted properly, a 5000 lb trailor should have a very different setting than an 8000 lb trailer.

Re: Prodigy settings.

I'll have to amend my settings now. Just got back from the first longer distance pull with the trailer really set up and loaded. I'm on a B1 and sometimes B2 setting, with the gain still about the same. It's set about 2/3 up. Towed really well. Trailer is towing at about 6000 lbs.

Re: Prodigy settings.

i know towing a 5000 or 8000 pound trailer would change the settings. I was looking to see what the changes would be on average.

Re: Prodigy settings.

i've got the prodigy also and it came with crappy directions. Mine has three buttons on the front, I assume the one on the left(scroll wheel) is the gain. What does that do?

Adamsrk,

The Prodigy has a rotating knob on the left, a push button on the right and a sliding lever underneath which is spring-loaded always returning to the right. This sliding lever is your manual knob, as you slide it from right to left it allows you to manually activate only your trailer brakes without having to press your foot on the Titan break pedal. The push button on the right is a boost knob, which allows you to start at an increase power level. b.1 starts at a level 13% above the power setting, b.2 and b.3 start 25% higher. To answer your question, the rotating knob on the left is your power setting and is adjustable from 0-13.0 volts. Essentially, this setting is a limit of the maximum voltage, which will be applied to your trailer brakes. The set-up is as follows:

With the engine running slide the manual lever all the way to the left and hold it there, then while holding the lever full left, adjust the rotating power knob on the left to a number between 0 and 13.0 (the manual recommends to start with 6.0). Then drive at 25mph and manually apply your trailer brakes by using the sliding lever full left. Don’t put your foot on the Titan brake pedal; only use the Prodigy manual lever. If your trailer brakes lockup reduce the level slightly and if they don’t increase the slightly until they do and then reduce slightly.

Re: Prodigy settings.

My total trailer and car comes in just under 5,000 lbs. I have found 5.9 to 6.1 with boost setting 2 works good for me. Mind you my trailer is new, so the brakes are adjusted well and the shoes are new. I will also admit, I'm just getting used to this whole towing thing and I do keep plaving with the settings.

I have often wondered if when I'm driving in a lot of rain if I should dial the setting down or remove all the boost or what???

And for what it is worth, when I bought the empty 1,700 lbs. trailer home I had the prodigy set at less than 2.0 and I still got trailer tire lock up once in a while...

This to me sounds like an issue with the brakes on the trailer itself, not anything to do witht he Prodigy. I would think you might want to consider a brake service on the trailer.

Re: Prodigy settings.

Ya i plan on servicing the brakes pretty soon. I haven't even looked at them yet. the trailer is only 3 years old though and not a lot of miles. I'm not sure how long they are suppose to last on this type trailer.
